Hang Time Record on your own paper
Procedure • Students work in groups of 3 or 4 with 2 pieces of tape per group (tape can be reused for each person in the group). • Each group will also need a meter stick to measure the distance and a chair. • Goal: Each person will measure their own jump height and calculate their hang-time. • Procedure: Stand facing the wall; Reach as high as you can and stick a piece of tape to the wall • Jump and stick a second piece of tape to the wall as high as you can • Measure the distance between the two pieces of tape (d) in meters. Record this measurement.
Calculation • d = vit + (½)at2 • Vi = 0 m/s; a = 10 m/s2 (use positive value) • Therefore: d = (½)at2 • We can rearrange the formula to solve for time, • Since this is only time up, double t to get the total hang time • What is your hang time?
Questions • What is your acceleration after your feet leave the floor? • Is there anything you can do once your feet leave the floor to make you jump higher? • What happens to your speed while you are in the air?
