  1. TEACHERS: • Would you like your students to already know school procedures & rules before arriving on the 1st day?? • Would you like lunch to be a little more organized the 1st week of school?? • What if students already knew how to read their schedules and were familiar with the class location?? • Would you like bus procedures to run more smoothly during the 1st week of school??

  2. Central Middle School “Survivor” Camp

  3. If you answered YES to any of these questions… Then you will want to know about “SURVIVOR” Middle School Boot Camp

  4. What is middle school boot camp? A day (approximately 1 week before school begins) in which incoming 5th grade students spend a few hours becoming familiar with the CMS staff, building, procedures, etc.

  5. CAMP PURPOSE • To help students become familiar with CMS building and layout • To ease the fears of transition from elementary to Middle School • To become familiar with teachers and other students • To begin the process of 1st day, school-wide procedures and routines • To meet their teacher

  6. Teacher Involvement • Spring meeting with 5th grade/Pride teachers • Choose camp dates • Teachers will pair up and decide what procedure/rule topic that they will teach during the information sessions • Set up camp before students arrive • Clean up after students leave • Reflect afterwards for successes and improvements for next year

  7. Inviting Fourth Grade Students • Schedule spring tour for future fifth graders • Hand out “Camp” brochures and invitation letter to students

  8. Get the Word Out • Camp brochures/registrations/invitation letter • Press release to the local newspaper • Send reminder letters to parents of fourth graders during the summer

  9. Registration Process • Registration forms are mailed back to office by designated deadline • Students are randomly placed in color-coded groups as registration forms are turned in

  10. Camp Check-in • Students are assigned to a color-coded group • Students are given color-coded name tags • T-shirts (optional – welcome any ideas!)

  14. Group Rotation Throughout the Day • Rotate by color coded name tags • Each session is approximately 20 min long • Group size should be about 12-15 students

  15. Information Sessions • Teachers are paired up for information sessions • Each pair of teachers will present 1 or 2 school routines or procedures • Teachers will have examples for students • Teachers will help fill out any necessary forms if it applies to his/her session

  16. Information Sessions • Student-led conferences/portfolios • Thumbs-Up certificates • Tour of school – map distributed • Discipline/detention • Recess rules • STEP • How to read a class schedule (fill out office schedule) • AM/PM/Bus dismissal • Tour of the media center

  20. Wrap Up Day“Meet Your Teacher” • All the students go to the play ground • Parents pick up their child • 6th grade parents/students arrive • Picnic for families to meet their teachers in a casual setting
