What is hazard mitigation? “The effort to reduce loss of life and property by lessening the impact of disasters.” • Most effective when implemented under a comprehensive, long-term mitigation plan • Identify risks and vulnerabilities and develop long-term strategies for protecting people and property • Key to breaking the cycle of disaster damage, reconstruction, and repeated damage (…if implemented) • Help communities comply with the Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000 (eligible for certain pre- and post-disaster funds) (Source: fema.gov)
States, local and tribal governments benefit from mitigation planning by: • Increase education and awareness around threats, hazards, and vulnerabilities; • Build partnershipsfor risk reduction involving government, organizations, businesses, and the public; • Identifylong-term, broadly-supported strategiesfor risk reduction; • Align risk reduction with other state, tribal, or community objectives; (…and fed/state land mgmt. agencies, etc.) • Identify implementation approachesthat focus resources on the greatest risks and vulnerabilities; and • Communicate prioritiesto potential sources of funding • Eligibility for federal funding for non-emergency disaster assistance (Source: fema.gov)
