  1. Construction Waste Recycling in Virginia Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

  2. Virginia joins other states across the nation with C&D Recycling • Faced with crowded landfills • Virginia currently rely mostly on Landfill’s and transfer stations for • processing C&D waste • Mandated recycling rate • High Construction Costs • Environmental concerns • (Base on DEQ statistics) Virginia recycles 5% of its C&D waste

  3. C&D Recycling A Growing Market • Municipalities and States target the bulky material looking to reduce landfill tonnage and increase recycling rates. • Recovery and processing plants are being built in different regions to offer contractors opportunity to recycle construction waste. • However market outlets play an important role for the Individual commodities. • Cost: tipping fee versus processing fees determines whether to recycle the material or landfill.

  4. C&D Recycling A Growing Market • Private Industry and Municipalities seeks DEQ permitting for C&D recycling. • Private Industry and Municipalities plan material recovery and material marketing. • Materials recovered from C&D plants need homes of reuse and recycling that equals landfill reduction and economic savings.

  5. Recycling Encouraged in the Commonwealth • Virginia Department of General Services leads the commonwealth in recycling construction and demolition debris and implementing green practices, while trying to minimize cost . • The Virginia Department of General Services decided to recycle all the building material of their 14th street project of 2 abandoned buildings.

  6. C&D Recycling Encouraged in the Commonwealth Consolidated Laboratory Motor Fuel Testing Lab. Demolition

  7. C&D Recycling Encouraged in the Commonwealth • The project yielded 14,000 tons of asphalt, concrete, steel and other mixed debris. • 12,750 tons of concrete were recycled on site through the use of a concrete crusher. • Other materials were sent to recycling facilities • The project had a savings min. $485,000

  8. C&D Recycling Encouraged in the Commonwealth Concrete Steel Sorted Metal

  9. C&D Recycling Encouraged in the Commonwealth On site crushed concrete used for backfill

  10. New 14th & Main Street Parking Deck • 7 levels • 485,000 square feet • 1,522 parking spaces Completion on August 1, 2005

  11. C&D Facilities in the Commonwealth Fauquier County C&D Waste Recovery Facility In August, 2007, Fauquier County Environmental Services opened a construction waste recovery facility as a means to divert valuable reusable materials from the county landfill. As “green” becomes a red hot subject, Fauquier County supports owners/builders in the region with a means toward their LEED certification by recycling their construction waste. Currently, 55% of our incoming construction/demolition (C&D) waste is recycled.
