  1. Atlantic Interoperability Initiative to Reduce Emissions (AIRE) Oceanic Demonstration Presented by: Kevin Chamness (ATO-E), Thien Ngo (ATO-P) June 11, 2008

  2. AIRE-Oceanic Demonstration Objectives • Demonstrate fuel savings and emission reductions in trans-Atlantic flights through oceanic trajectory collaboration and optimization • Develop and evaluate new concepts, standards, procedures, and best practices in AIRE-Oceanic that lead to global inoperability, fuel savings and emission reductions • Capitalize on existing technologies on both sides of the Atlantic • Identify implementation issues, obstacles, bottlenecks, metrics and solutions, working with our European partners

  3. Partners for AIRE-Oceanic Demonstrations in May 2008

  4. Aircraft on a Pre-Optimization flight profile 1 AOC recalculates profile and sends to Oceanic Coordinator. Pilot requests clearance 2 ATC probes new profile for conflicts 3 AEA089 FL 390 Mach 081 Profile Available: ATC clears aircraft to new profile 4a Profile Not Available: ATC sends Unable to pilot, investigates alternatives, and suggests alternative profile to AOC 4b Repeat sequence with Step 2 5 AIRE – Oceanic Preliminary Demonstration Optimization Sequence MAD New York Oceanic Santa Maria Oceanic Coordination and Clearance Sequence SDQ Sequence repeats at every 10 degrees of longitude

  8. AIRE-Oceanic Preliminary Demonstration Results (1) AOC planning error Fuel Savings (kg) in Oceanic Airspace Demo Flight Number

  9. AIRE-Oceanic Preliminary Demonstration Results (2) AOC planning error Fuel Savings (%) in Oceanic Airspace Demo Flight Number

  10. AIRE-Oceanic Preliminary Demonstration Results (3) • Preliminary analysis from Air Europa Airlines showed improvement in fuel savings up to 1% in oceanic airspace • Based on eight (8) oceanic flights • Applied continual trajectory adjustments during flight using manual procedures • Route optimized within New York Center and Nav Portugal controlled airspace only • Significant savings according to Air Europa Airlines • FAA will further analyze flight data to determine fuel savings and environmental benefits

  11. Demonstration Outcomes / Observations • The manual process used in the AIRE-Oceanic Demonstrations will provide valuable information for the longer term 4-D Oceanic Trajectory Management program under NextGen • Collaboration with European partners under AIRE will provide the framework for future shared programs and demonstrate global harmonization consistent with the goals of NextGen and Single European Sky ATM Research Program (SESAR) • The AIRE-Oceanic Preliminary Demonstrations provided preliminary estimates of fuel savings for a limited number of flights • Provide an understanding of the co-ordination required between the oceanic centers as well as between the AOC, ATC, and flight crew • The AIRE-Oceanic Optimization Demonstration will identify approaches to expand the AIRE-Oceanic Demonstrations to more flights to achieve the associated environmental benefits by making modifications to aircraft’s 4D profile. • Provide information for the development of the automated systems and methodologies that will make real-time Oceanic Trajectory Optimization viable.

  12. FY09 AIRE-Oceanic Demonstrations • Expand domestic and international partnership • Include more partners (airlines, ATC centers) • Extend demonstrations to include both westbound and eastbound flights • Integrate with other domains to begin exploring gate-to-gate concepts • Potential joint AIRE Oceanic & Tailored Arrivals demonstrations • Identify requirements for early implementations • Leverage AIRE-Oceanic Preliminary Demonstration results and lessons learned • Continue to enhance data collection and analysis
