James 111 Church Street Johannesburg 0919 12 April 2012 Note the capital letters in: The Editor Skip two lines after the newspaper’s address and draw a line Skip two lines after your name and draw a line x There is no complimentary Ending. Use a penname or Pseudonym if you do not want to reveal your identity Salutations Followed by a dash x Add your own name & address & the date The first paragraph starts next to the dash x x Everything between the lines is what you would like published

  3. Formal letter Salutations – write ‘Dear Sir’ unless you know it is a woman, then ‘Dear Madam’ Your name and address on the right Address and title of the recipient on the left. Topic line Gives a brief indication of your business Underline or in Block Letters Your signature & Full name Body Start each paragraph against the margin. Skip lines between paragraphs. Homework • Look at the letter on p72 of your English in Action, then write a letter to the press in which you refer to a recent incident that happened in a restaurant and express your opinion. • Write a formal letter to the management of the restaurant, regarding the incident in your letter to the press. (p183 EiA) • Write a friendly letter to a friend telling him/her about the incident in your letter to the press. (p18 –EiA) • Complete the fill-in exercise on p18 in your English in Action
