Verbal Adverbs Adverbs answer questions “how?” or “in what manner?”: быстро (quickly), дёшево (cheaply), дорого (expensively), хорошо (well), красиво (beautifully), профессионально (professionally) Verbal adverbs are formed from verbs: улыбаясь (smilingly), смеясь (laughingly) Verbal adverbs are used differently in Russian than they are in English.

Returning home from the theater, we were speaking about ballet. Perfective Вернувшись домой из театра, мы сели пить чай. Having returned home from the theater, we had some tea. (Literally: sat down to drink some tea)

  5. Verbal Adverbs - Imperfective • Remove the 3rd person plural (они) ending. • Add the suffix –Я (or –A after Ш, Ж, Ч, Щ) • For reflexive (-ся) verbs, add –СЬ читать они читаютчитая говорить они говорятговоря заниматься они занимаютсязанимаясь

  6. Verbal Adverbs - Imperfective ЗАПОМНИТЕ! ДАВАТЬ –type verbs retain -BA- in the middle!!! давать (to give) они даютBUT:давая узнавать (to recognize) они узнают BUT:узнавая вставать (to get up)они встают BUT:вставая

  7. Verbal Adverbs - Perfective • Replace the Л in the MASCULINE PAST with the suffix–B. • For reflexive verbs, replace -ЛСЯ with -ВШИСЬ прочитать он прочиталпрочитав поговорить он поговорилпоговорив улыбнуться он улыбнулсяулыбнувшись

  8. Verbal Adverbs - Perfective ЗАПОМНИТЕ! Prefixed forms of идти follow the Imperfective pattern: прийти (to arrive) они придут придя уйти (to leave) они уйдут уйдя найти (to find) они найдут найдя

  9. Verbal Adverbs -USAGE Verbal adverbs formed fromimperfectiveverbs denote an action that occurs simultaneously with the action of the main verb. Verbal adverbs formed from perfective verbs denote a completed action that has occurred before the action of the main verb. Рассказывая о русском балете, лектор показывал фильм. Закончив лекцию, преподаватель ответил на вопросы. Зрители стояли у театра после спектакля, ожидая балерину. Поужинав, мы пошли в кино.
