Rise of Islam Cause Effect • Prophet Muhammad • Had revelations from Allah, or God, from the Angel Gabriel • He believed that he was last of prophets and that there was one true God, Allah. • He began to preach and convert others • People in Mecca feared that traditional gods would be neglected and no one would come to the city anymore to trade. • Muhammad flees Mecca and goes to Medina (called Hijrah).
Rise of Islam Cause Effect • Muhammad is great leader in Medina, converting and uniting people. • Muhammad returns to Mecca with 10,000 men, takes the city, and converts everyone. • Mecca is now a Muslim center.
Rise of Islam Cause Effect • Muslims do not separate personal from religious life. • 5 pillars of belief • Faith • Prayer • Alms • Fasting • Pilgrimage • Islam teaches that: • There is only one God, Allah • Each person is responsible for his own actions • Every Muslim must “submit” to God. • The Qur’an is the word of Allah given to the prophet Muhammad
