  2. The contribution to the European Network Best practice: In-home caregiver exchange practice in Miercurea Ciuc for the personnel of Caritas Alba Iulia, Harghita branch

Premises of the exchange program Contract signed with the management of Caritas in Germany and Switzerland, in the following topics: • care giving at the cared person’s residency (home) • care giving at Elderly homes. Basic requirements for the applicants: • to complete a vocational training, as in-home caregiver • to participate at an intensive, 6-week long German language course.

In-home care giving vocational training Theoretical part Duration:120 hours Curriculum: • Nursing (hygiene, feeding) • Grooming the cared person environment • Prophylactics (disease prevention) • First-aid giving • Geriatrics • Hospice, palliative training • Kinesthetic training • Fire and labor safety

Practical part Duration: 240 hours, classroom practice and field work Classroom practice: • Cleanliness • Changing the diaper • Decubitus prevention • Kinesthetic training Field work: • Realized under assistance of nurse or/and in-home caregiver personnel either at Caritas premises or at Elderly Homes.

  6. 1st group Target group: personnel of Caritas Alba Iulia, Harghita branch Number of participants: 14 At the moment they are attending the last week German language training course. After finishing the course, from September they will go to Germany or Switzerland to work at Elderly homes or at cared persons residency. Terms of participation in the exchange program: they need to have a family (because in these cases they don not leave their family permanently and will return back home). Frequency: 2-3 times /year for 2-3 month long periods The 2 institution’s management, would like to send abroad 50 persons until the end of 1st year.

Future plans • To take into the program persons from outside of Caritas, civilians. • The costs of the residential German language course will be covered from the participant’s first salary gained in Germany or Switzerland (these costs include the accommodation and food during the 6 week course), there is no tuition fee , because the teachers are retired language teachers from Germany. • To include the German version of LaMP project Handbook in the teaching material.

  8. Testing the Handbook Data: 3rd of May 2012 Place: Caritas, Odorheiu Secuiesc, Harghita county Participants: 14 in-home caregiver from Caritas, Szekeres Ildikó and Ferencz S. Katalinas project staff. Procedure: Short presentation of the LaMP project aims and objectives 1. The participants were divided in 6 groups. Every group (2-3 people) had to write short dialogues (in Hungarian) about the specific activities during the day, taking LaMP Handbook as a basis. Every group had 2 different activities, for example Waking-up and Emergency call. 2. Each group received the German version of the selected dialogues . They had to read the activities they had chosen (for ex. Waking-up and Emergency call dialogues) and compare them with their own dialogues. After this, they got a piece of paper, where they could comment, write their opinion about the specific dialogue: Is it too long? Is it enough? Do they find it useful the words, expressions? Was it understandable?

  9. 3. To look over the second part of the LaMP Handbook? Make comments on a piece of paper. 4.Focus group discussion about the following issues: a. Do they have any fear, anxiety about their work abroad? Yes. They are worried because of their language knowledge and cultural differences. b. Beyond the financial profit, do they think that this experience could have other benefits? Yes. Language knowledge, experience, adaptability and professional knowledge. c. What kind of qualities does an in-home caregiver need who would like to work abroad? - basic professional skills - adaptability, flexibility - empathy - respectfulness 5.Formal evaluation of the LaMP Handbook – completing the questionnaires.
