Certification – Academic Requirements • Admission • Division III Bylaw 14.1.7.1 • Academic Standing • Division III Bylaw 14.01.2.1 • Satisfactory Progress • Division III Bylaw 14.4.1 • Full-Time Enrollment • Division III Bylaw 14.1.8.1 • Must maintain satisfactory progress toward a degree per institution. • Meet conference requirements. • Must be in good academic standing per institution. • Meet conference requirements. • Must be admitted as regularly enrolled, degree-seeking student. • Per regular, published policies. • Must be enrolled in no less than 12 credit hours for competition, full time for practice. • Final term exceptions.

Academic Requirements: Admission • Admission • Division III Bylaw 14.1.7.1 • Phil participated a summer bridge program for students who show academic potential but do not meet admissions requirements. • He met all the requirements of the summer bridge program and was admitted for the fall as a regularly enrolled, degree-seeking student according to the institution’s regular, published admissions policy.  • Must be admitted as regularly enrolled, degree-seeking student. • Per regular, published policies.

Academic Requirements: Academic Standing • Academic Standing • Division III Bylaw 14.01.2.1 • Phil is a first-semester student and has not yet completed any college courses. • From the NCAA University course catalog: “NCAA University students are in good academic standing unless they are placed on a semester of academic concern, a required academic leave, or dismissed.” • There are no NCAA waivers of good academic standing. • Must be in good academic standing per institution. • Meet conference requirements.

Academic Requirements: Full-Time Enrollment • FT Enrollment • Division III Bylaw 14.1.8.1 • From the NCAA University course catalog: “A student is considered a full-time undergraduate student if the student is enrolled in a minimum of 12 semester hours of undergraduate credit for the semester.” • Phil is enrolled in the following courses: • BIO 101 3 credits + 1 credit lab. • COM 210 3 credits. • SOC 101 3 credits. • PHYS 104 1 credit. • UNI 101 1 credit freshman seminar. • For practice and competition, must be enrolled full time.  • For competition, must in no less than 12 credit hours. • Final term exceptions.

  14. Continuing Undergraduate Students Shea joined the volleyball team her sophomore year. Shea only needs 8 credit hours to graduate AND she has a student-teaching requirement to fulfill during the spring semester!

Certification – Athletics Requirements Seasons of Participation Division III Bylaw 14.2 10 Semesters/15 Quarters Division III Bylaw 14.2.2 • SA shall not engage in more than four seasons of participation in any one sport. • Seasons of participation shall be completed in first 10 semesters or 15 quarters of the SA's enrollment. • Full-time enrollment, only.

Athletics Requirements: Season of Participation • SA participates (practices or competes) during or after the first contest in the traditional segment.  • Season NOT used: • During the traditional segment when a SA participates in a preseason scrimmage or preseason exhibition conducted before the first contest following the SA's initial participation of that academic year at that institution;  • During the traditional segment when a SA participates in an alumni contest conducted before the first regular-season contest following the SA's initial participation of that academic year at that institution; and  • In baseball, field hockey, lacrosse, soccer, softball and volleyball when a SA participates during the nontraditional segment. Seasons of Participation Division III Bylaw 14.2 • SA shall not engage in more than four seasons of participation in any one sport.

Athletics Requirements: 10 Semesters/15 Quarters • Knowing that Shea did not begin her career as a SA at zero semesters, we have to figure what Shea's starting point is.  • Can't we just count from her initial enrollment? 10 Semesters/15 Quarters Division III Bylaw 14.2.2 • Seasons of participation shall be completed in first 10 semesters or 15 quarters of the SA's enrollment. • Full-time enrollment, only. No! Keep an eye on part-time semesters AND semesters with withdrawals!

Academic Requirements: Final Semester/Quarter • The SA may practice or compete while enrolled in less than a full-time course load during the final semester or quarter of their degree program if the SA is enrolled in the final credit hours necessary to complete the degree requirements. Full-Time Enrollment Division III Bylaw 14.1.8.1 • Must be enrolled in no less than 12 credit hours for competition, full time for practice. • Final term exceptions.

  20. Experiential Learning Exception Student Teaching Internship Clinical Capstone Project • The SA may be eligible to participate at less than full time in their final semester or quarter, even if they have an outstanding experiential learning requirement in the following term. • The experiential learning requirement MUST BE considered full time by the institution or else the SA must supplement with extra classes to get to full time to be eligible.

Graduate/Post-Baccalaureate Students • After completing the undergraduate degree, a Division III SA may continue to participate in athletics at the same institution or at a new Division III institution if the SA:  • Is enrolled and seeking a graduate or second baccalaureate degree; • Has eligibility remaining; and • The SA still has time remaining within the 10-semester/15-quarter eligibility period.

  24. Waiver for Graduate/Post-Baccalaureate Students – Exemplary Academic Success • SA must graduate in within four academic years. • The student-athlete has seasons of participation remaining. A season of participation shall be determined based on Division III legislation, regardless where (e.g. other NCAA division, NAIA) the participation occurs; • With no breaks in full-time enrollment during undergraduate program; and  • Graduate with a grade-point average of 3.0 or higher.

Certification From Term to Term Seasons of Participation Division III Bylaw 14.2 Eligibility Between Terms Division III Bylaw 14.1.8.1.6.6 Change in Eligibility Status Division III Bylaw 14.1.10 • When eligibility changes at the end of a term, the SA becomes eligible or ineligible on the date that specific SA's eligibility is officially certified. • Certification of eligibility does not have to occur on the same day for all SAs. • Have been registered in a full-time course load at the end of the term immediately before the competition (continuing students only);​ • OR​ • Accepted for enrollment as a regular full-time student for the next regular term (continuing students or enrolling students).

Eligibility Between Terms Eligibility Between Terms Division III Bylaw 14.1.8.1.6.6 • Kyle's fall finals ended on December 20. • NCAA University's fall finals ended on December 22. • Kyle was enrolled in at full-time status in the fall but is only registered for 3 spring credit hours – is he eligible to compete in a meet on December 29? • Have been registered in a full-time course load at the end of the term immediately before the competition (continuing students only);​ • OR​ • Accepted for enrollment as a regular full-time student for the next regular term (continuing students or enrolling students).

Eligibility Between Terms (con’t) Eligibility Between Terms Division III Bylaw 14.1.8.1.6.6 • Kyle's fall finals ended on December 20. • NCAA University's fall finals ended on December 22. • Kyle was enrolled at less than full time during the fall and has yet to practice or compete, but he is registered above full time for spring 2020.  Can he compete in the meet on the 29th? • Have been registered in a full-time course load at the end of the term immediately before the competition (continuing students only);​ • OR​ • Accepted for enrollment as a regular full-time student for the next regular term (continuing students or enrolling students).

Change in Eligibility Status Change in Eligibility Status Division III Bylaw 14.1.10 • When eligibility changes at the end of a term and the SA becomes eligible, the earliest certification may occur is the day after the institution’s last scheduled final exam. • When eligibility changes at the end of a term and the SA becomes ineligible, the latest certification may occur is the first day of classes for the next regular academic term. • When eligibility changes at the end of a term, the SA becomes eligible or ineligible on the date that specific SA's eligibility is officially certified. • Certification of eligibility does not have to occur on the same day for all SAs.

  29. Change in Eligibility Status (con’t) Change in Eligibility Status Division III Bylaw 14.1.10 • Kyle's fall finals ended December 20. NCAA University's fall finals ended December 22.  Spring term starts January 15. When does Kyle have to be certified? • When eligibility changes at the end of a term, the SA becomes eligible or ineligible on the date that specific SA's eligibility is officially certified. • Certification of eligibility does not have to occur on the same day for all SAs. A = December 21, the day after Kyle's finals. B = December 23, the day after NCAA U's finals. C = January 15, the start of the spring term. D = Anytime between December 23 & January 15.

Certification – Transfer Students Types of Transfers Division III Bylaws 14.5.4 & 14.5.5 • Exceptions • Division III Bylaws 14.5.4.1, 14.5.5.1.1 & 14.5.5.1.3 • Transfer Triggers • Division III Bylaw 14.5.2 • Academic Year in Residence • Division III Bylaw 14.5.1 • Two Year exceptions • Four Year exceptions. • Two Year nonparticipation exception. • Two Year (2-4). • Four Year (4-4). • Four Two Four (4-2-4). • Enrolled in a minimum full-time program of studies and attended class. Reported for a regular-squad practice.  • Practiced or competed while enrolled as a part-time student. •  A student who transfers (is required to complete one full academic year of residence before being eligible to compete).

Certification – Transfer Students (con’t) • Transfer Triggers • Division III Bylaw 14.5.2 • What's not a transfer? • Enrolled part time before coming to your institution without practicing or competing. • Never reported for practice at initial institution. • Enrolled in a minimum full-time program of studies and attended class. Reported for a regular-squad practice.  • Practiced or competed while enrolled as a part-time student.

Certification – Transfer Students (con’t) • Academic Year in Residence • Division III Bylaw 14.5.1 • This is your baseline. • Educate your staff, coaches and SAs! • Also be aware of any conference rules! •  A student who transfers is required to complete one full academic year of residence before being eligible to compete.

Certification – Transfer Students (con’t) Types of Transfers Division III Bylaws 14.5.4 & 14.5.5 • Create a timeline. • Identify type of transfer. • Multiple transfers. • (1) 2-2-2-4-2-4 = 4-2-4. • (2) 2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-4 = 2-4. • (3) 4-4-4-4 = 4-4. • Two Year (2-4). • Four Year (4-4). • Four Two Four (4-2-4).

  35. Certification – Transfer Students (con’t) • Requests for information about a transfer SA should include these key elements:    • Previous collegiate enrollment history. • All transcripts. • Complete participation history, including activities when not enrolled. • Tracer form.

Certification – Transfer Students (con’t) • Exceptions • Division III Bylaws 14.5.4.1, 14.5.5.1.1 & 14.5.5.1.3 • If a transfer SA meets an exception: • The SA may practice and compete. • If a transfer SA does not meet an exception: • The SA may practice, but may not compete until they have completed an academic year of residence. • If the SA practices, they will still use a season of participation if practice occurs during or after first contest in the traditional segment. • Two Year exceptions. • Four Year exceptions. • Two Year nonparticipation exception.

Certification – Transfer Students (con’t) • Exceptions for 4-4 Transfers: • Has not practiced or competed in intercollegiate athletics. • SA would have been both academically and athletically eligible, at the time of transfer, had the SA stayed at the previous school. • If previous school did not sponsor the sport.  • Completed 24 semester or 36 quarter transferable-degree credit hours and two full-time semesters or three full-time quarters. Division III Bylaw 14.5.5.1.1

  39. Certification – Transfer Students (con’t) • The Two-Year Nonparticipation Exception applies to 2-4, 4-2-4 and 4-4 transfers. • For a consecutive two-year period immediately before participation, has neither practiced nor competed in the sport in intercollegiate competition; and • Has neither practiced nor competed in organized noncollegiate amateur competition while enrolled as a full-time student in a collegiate institution.
