Mercury, the smallest planet in our solar system, has a diameter of 3,022 miles (4,878 km). It is a terrestrial planet with a solid surface composed primarily of rocks, similar to Earth. Mercury's thin crust is marked by numerous impact craters. Known for its extreme temperatures, the planet reaches scorching highs of 427°C (801°F) during the day and plunges to frigid lows of -173°C (-279°F) at night.
