  2. Pre-Reading Activity Using the handout provided, read over the story clues and try to predict what might happen in the book you are about to read.

  3. Vocabulary Activity • Working with a partner, choose either Vocab List A or Vocab List B • Define your 10 words using a dictionary • Create a fill-in-the-blank worksheet using your 10 vocabulary words by creating sentences • Swap worksheets with your partner and answer each others questions

  4. Anticipation Guide On the handout put a check under “Likely” if you believe that the statement about Puritan life is true. Put a check under “Unlikely” if you believe the statement is not true

  5. Questions for Discussion • Would you enjoy living a Puritan lifestyle? Why or why not? • What would you do if you were in Susanna’s position? Would you tell what you knew or keep quiet? • What would you have done if you or a member of your family was accused of being a witch?

Web Site Visit Visit the following link below first to get a better idea of the witch trials and Salem life. • http://school.discovery.com/schooladventures/salemwitchtrials/ After reviewing the above site, choose a character involved in the Salem Witch Trials from one of the sites below. Each student must pick a different character and write their initials next to the name on the Web Site Visit Character Choice sheet. After reading about your character, fill out the corresponding worksheet.   7. Family Focus Susanna wanted to join the group of girls who had “secret meetings.” The girls gained a lot of power in the community when people believed that the girls were afflicted by witches. There are many instances in history when a group of people have caused mass hysteria, concluding in the persecution of many innocent people. Two examples of this are the Holocaust and the Red Scare. • Interview a family member who was alive during either the Holocaust or Red Scare and find out how they felt about what was going on. Has their view changed from when the event occurred and now? • With your family member try and come up with some more instances in history where this phenomenon has occurred and discuss how you feel about it.

  8. Writing Prompt You are writing in the form of a journal entry, 2-3 pages long. Imagine you are one of the characters from A Break With Charity. Currently Salem is in the middle of the witch trials and accusations are on the rise. What does your character have to say about everything that is going on? Are they in favor or against the trials? How are they involved? What is the atmosphere in town currently like? What do you think the future will bring? Choose a character from the following list:
