  1. World Climates

  2. Two Climate Categories • Continental Climate: Large temperature differences during seasons and throughout one day. Closeness to large bodies of water affects climate more.

  3. Two Climate Categories: • Maritime Climate: Small differences in temperature because winds from ocean bring warmth.

  4. Climate Controls: • Latitude: The closer to the equator, the warmer it is.

  5. Climate Controls • Ocean Currents

  6. Climate Controls • Mountains: Air will be wetter or drier depending on the side of the mountain you are on.

  7. Climate Controls • Winds

  8. Climate Controls • Altitude

  9. TYPES OF CLIMATES: Low Latitude • Low latitude climates: • Climates controlled by tropical air masses and ocean currents. Found between 0 degrees and 23 ½ degrees north and south of the equator.

  10. Tropical Wet Climate • Description: Hot and rainy all year. High humidity. • Yearly precipitation: average of 103 inches

  11. Tropical Wet and Dry • Description: Hot all year with rainy season and a dry season. Changes occur because of switch in tropical winds. • Yearly Precipitation: During rainy season, over 7 inches a month. During dry season, less than ½ inch a month.

  12. Arid Climate • Description: Hand and dry all year with very little rain. Covers 12% of the earth and is increasing. • Yearly Precipitation: Less than an inch of rain a year.

  13. Mid-Latitude Climate • Climates are affected by two different air masses (tropical or polar). Found between 23 ½ degrees and 60 degrees.

  14. Semi Arid • Description: Hot, dry summers and short, cool, dry winters. • Yearly Precipitation: Varies from 4-20 inches depending on the region.

  15. The Great Plains of the United States

  16. Mediterranean Climate • Description: Warm all year with dry summers and short, rainy winters. • Yearly Precipitation: 17 inches of rain a year.

  17. Mediterranean: Napa Valley

  18. Humid Subtropical • Description: Hot, rainy summer and mild winters with some rain. • Yearly precipitation: 48 inches

  19. Marine West Coast • Description: Warm summers, cool winters, and rainfall all year. Warm ocean currents affect the coast. • Yearly Precipitation: 75 inches of rain (can reach up to 100)

  20. Marine West Coast: Great Britain or west coast of Washington

  21. Humid Continental • Description: Warm, rainy summers and cool, snowy winters. Four seasons and daily temperatures change often. • Yearly Precipitation: 32 inches

  22. HIGH LATITUDE CLIMATES: • Polar and Arctic air masses dominate. Only exists in the Northern hemisphere because of the large landmasses. Found above 55 degrees north only.

  23. Subarctic Climate • Description: Cold, snowy winters and cool, rainy summers. • Yearly Precipitation: 12 inches

  24. Tundra Climate • Description: Very severe, cold winters. Cold summers and little rain or snow. • Yearly Precipitation: 8 inches or less

  25. Highland Climate • Description: Climate depends on altitude. Temperature and precipitation vary with height. • Yearly Precipitation: Varies
