Parents’ Hot Issues? • John (13 years old boy) spends 3 hours every day using the internet • His parents are not familiar with what he does, he knows to operate the computer way better than them. • He always claims that he is using the net to finish his school work • He has few e-mail accounts, a Face Book account, and chats regularly on MSN • His attitude as well as his behavior start to show degradation during the last few months • The parents are sure that such problem has a lot to do with the use of internet • What would you advise them to do??

  9. Basic Facts • The internet is a wonderful source of information but it could also be a big source of danger • Internet and computers became facts of life that you have no option to ignore or avoid • A big percentage of children age 11-17 are exposed to sites with inappropriate content (75-90% !!!)

  10. Basic Facts • As a parent, your job is to protect your child from harm. Wrong use of the computer could be considered the biggest danger that threatens your child (it is an enemy that stays home with you without going away)

  11. Basic Facts • Every child is curious, they search different sites and have good possibilities to get hooked to inappropriate ones • Internet misuse could cause serious damage to your child’s personality and his future

  12. تعمل ايه ؟What would you do??

  13. Proper Internet Use • Choose a right location to place the computer (has to be a high traffic area in the house where the screen is exposed to all passer bys) • Learn as much as you can about the use of internet and any misuse that could be dangerous for your child • Spend time educating yourself about Face Book, MSN, appropriate and inappropriate use of e-mails.

  14. Proper Internet Use • Check the search history after your child’s net session is over • Install security soft ware that prevent your child from accessing sites that have inappropriate content • Find out who your child’s on line friends (pals) and check the content of your child net activities (chat language, e-mails etc )

  15. Misuse use of TV and Electronic games

  16. Parents’ Hot Issues? • Cathy is 5 year old who spend 2 hours every day watching TV and playing with her Nintendo DS and almost the whole day every Saturday and Sunday • Her mom is not too happy with such attachment to electronics and wanted her to pay more attention to her school work and spend sometime with the family • If you are the mom what would you do??

  17. TV and Games basic facts • TV, DVD players and electronic games have become the best babysitter for many parents • It helps keep them quiet when we are busy washing the dishes, reading a newspaper or getting a nap • Using TV, movies and video games is very effective not only to babysit them but to isolate them

  18. TV and Games basic facts • There is nothing wrong with electronics if used properly • A lot of us (parents) watch too much TV they just copy what we do

  19. تعمل ايه ؟What would you do??

  20. Proper use of TV and Games • Set reasonable limit for the use of these devices. • Be aware of the content of the games played and the TV shows watched by your child • Do not allow a TV in your child bedroom TV has to be placed in the family room where everybody is watching what is on • Control the use of electronic games (appropriate place, reasonable time limit)

  21. Stubbornness

  22. Parents’ Hot Issues? • You ask your GR 4 boy to collect the garbage bags and help you to bring it outside the house and he frankly says NO • You tell him that he should be nice and help out with things done at home but he still refuse • You beg him to do it for your sake, he insists NOO • You promise him to get a bar of chocolate if he responds, he starts paying some attention then when you promise with a gift, he finally responds to your request • You are happy thinking that you achieved what you wanted, but did you really? • What is the other option if there any??

  23. Stubbornness Facts • Children are not stubborn by nature, they learn to be stubborn because it pays off • Your child knows that if he holds for a while, you will offer him more than what he wants • The child becomes in control of the situation and moves you the way he wants, and you are allowing it!!!

  24. تعمل ايه ؟What would you do??

  25. Dealing with a stubborn child • If you want your child to do what he is asked to do, just say it once, if no response do it yourself or have his brother or sister do it instead of him • Hold your child accountable for his wrong action, refuse to drive him to his friends house the next time he asks you to.

  26. Respect

  27. Parents’ Hot Issues? • Mathew GR 7, pays no respect to both parents. Mom kept on yelling and screaming at him but it did not help • Dad used different kinds of punishment but it made the problem worse • How can you help them improve their child’s attitude

  28. Respect Facts • Respect is a two ways equation, if your child does not respect you, look at yourself , do you pay enough respect to your spouse or to the child himself • Attitude and behavior are more caught than taught, your child copies what he sees • Disrespect may have serious consequences: when a boy is allowed to disrespect his mother, he will grow up to marry a women he can dominate

  29. Respect Facts • When a girl is allowed to disrespect her dad she will have problems with every male supervisor she works with. No need to say that she will search for a person who is easy to be controlled to have as a husband • What do you teach your child if you scream at him “you have to go to church” you come drop her off and go out for a coffee

  30. تعمل ايه ؟What would you do??

  31. Teaching them Respect • Your children are watching you and are learning, act in a responsible and respectful manner yourself and they will get it • Watch your attitude at home, compared to the image you reflect to others (outsiders) or if you say something and do the other, you encourage disrespect in your house
