  1. Finding the culprit • Bronze: state what an eyewitness testimony is and some flaws. • Silver: read through evidence and select facts • Gold: analyse the evidence and draw some conclusions

  2. What is testimonial evidence? Testimonial evidence includes oral or written statements given to police as well as testimony in court by people who witnessed an event. Eyewitness accounts can be a useful tool in helping investigators with analyzing a crime scene, but are not viewed to be highly reliable. In addition, eyewitness identifications (right or wrong) can have a big influence on the outcome of an investigation or trial. People are likely to view the same scene in different ways depending on their positions, line of sight, familiarity with the area, and other factors that can interfere with a person’s ability to remember details. 3. Hopefully now you have identified the powder. You are now going to interview various witness and gather evidence From their statements to work out who did it.

  4. Please help me. I’m in jail!! They think I did it. Please interview everyone and try and set me free!!

  5. Please help me. I’m innocent i swear. This is the last thing i need at the moment. My wife gave birth a few weeks ago and is struggling. She needs me at home especially as i do all the night feeds. I don’t think she is coping without me. I have nothing much to say about the day of the theft. I started work at 8:30 am. It is my job to open up and unlock all the doors to the galleries that are alarmed. I am training up my partner Jim, so he was there with me and also he has a set of keys so i did the ground floor whilst he did the upper two levels. He then helped me to finish. We both them went to the restaurant and bought a bacon sandwich each and I had a coffee. At 9:00 am we both were at out posts patrolling the area where the painting was housed. The day started off very quietly and there was nothing unusual about the morning. I was very tired so i must admit that i asked Jim to get me some coffee a few times during the morning as i was feeling tired. At no point did i leave my post ,by the arm chair, right up until the robbery. Jim did go down to get some lunch at about 14:30. I remember despite drinking another coffee, feeling ridiculously tired. The next thing i know i am being woken up by the police who immediately arrest me for negligence. As i looked up the painting had gone! JOHN the senior guard of the painting

  6. I started work at 8:30 am with John(the senior security guard).I help him to open up and unlock all the doors to the galleries that are alarmed. I did the upper two levels as there are far fewer doors to unlock . I then helped John to finish downstairs. We both them went to the restaurant and bought a bacon sandwich each and a coffee and juice. At 9:00 am we both were at out posts patrolling the area where the painting was housed. I don’t mean to get John into trouble by saying this but he was very tired that day. He turned up with red blood shot eyes and i could see he was struggling. I offered to get John coffee several times during the morning. It was very quiet and so we thought that having one guard protecting the galleries it would be fine. This was against the rules but out of sympathy for John i thought this would be a good idea. He did really respond to the coffees and after the third coffee he seemed to be his old self. This worried me then when at around two a coffee vender man came up to the gallery and asked for my help with opening the vending machine. He said it was broken and needed a bit of muscle to help him as the machine was heavy. Running up to two o clock John had began to flag again so i agreed to go. I was only two minutes so i didn’t tell John. I grabbed one more coffees and an orange juice for myself and made my way back. John sent me to go down to get some lunch at about two thirty. I remember despite drinking another coffee, feeling ridiculously tired. The next thing i know i am being woken up by the restaurant owner as i have fallen asleep downstairs! He tells me the news that John has been arrested. JIM the junior guard of the painting

  7. I remember quite a lot about the day as i wasn’t very busy. The new coffee vending machine has taken away a lot of the restaurants revenue. I find that people come and eat here but they tend to find it faster, if they just want a coffee , to go to the machine. I started setting up the restaurant just gone half past eight, when the main entrance was opened. The two guards, John and Jim, came to get their morning breakfast. They don’t often buy breakfast and i had to put the bacon on especially for them, so i remember. John looked tired so i gave him an extra large coffee. My morning continued to be slow. I started to prepare lunch at around 1:30pm. At about 2:00pm, i thought i saw one of the guards running past the restaurant. He seemed a bit frantic. I couldn’t see who it was but it was unusual to see a guard running around. They are forbidden to leave their posts and even toilet breaks are forbidden unless they are at certain times 10:00 and 3:00pm so that there are always guards around the most valuable items. If you left your post unattended you would have been fired! Of course this was strictly confidential. At about 2:40pm i found Jim the younger of the guard asleep on one of the benches. Jim always comes down for lunch at 2:30 so i was expecting him and had his lunch ready! It was very unlikely for guards ever to be late. He seemed very groggy and had orange juice all over his trousers. I could tell it was orange juice as it smelt strongly of orange juice. He noticed when he came to that his keys were missing. Rob the restaurant owner

  8. From a number of witness statements it was evident that John had a lot of coffee, the morning of the theft. So what are the affects of coffee drinking on your body.? The active ingredient of coffee is a substance called caffeine. -Caffeine stimulates the central nervous system and can produce restlessness, headaches, and irritability. caffeine also elevates your heart rate and blood pressure. -Caffeine is also a diuretic and causes a loss of fluid, which then leads to a dehydrating effect. -Perhaps the most important long-term problem is the effect of caffeine on sleep. The half-life of caffeine in the body is about 6 hours. If you drink a big cup of coffee with 200 mg of caffeine at 4PM, at 10PM you still have about 100mg in your body. By 4AM, you still have 50mg floating in your system. Even though you may be able to sleep, you may not be able to obtain the restful benefits of deep sleep. What's worse, the cycle continues as you may use more and more caffeine in hopes of counteracting this deficit. -Caffeine causes your heart rate increases, your pupils dilate, your muscles tighten up, and glucose is released into your blood stream for extra energy. - Caffeine causes a release of the hormone adrenaline into your blood stream that causes the flight and fight response in your body. Sarah the biochemist

  9. I am the forensic scientist who photographed and analysed the scene. The first thing i did was a fingerprint analysis. I found four different fingerprints on various items. These are listed below Found only on the Orange juice cup- only a couple there Found on the paper weight and on the glass vile in the room Found a lot on the orange juice cup Found on the glass vial outside the window Fiona the forensic scientist

  10. als I also wanted to do a chemical analysis of the orange juice and the contents of the vial that had spilt onto the floor. These have been sent off for analysis and we won’t get the results back for a few weeks. However, my initial impression is of suspicion. Both the vial and the orange juice had a metallic smell. The orange juice also looked like it had separated a little so that there was a layer on the surface. This is unusual for orange juice. Most of the glass was found outside the window which indicates that the window was broken from the inside. Fiona the forensic scientist

  11. Fingerprints taken, shifty nature of guard I was called to the scene when one of the visitors to the museum uncovered the scene and called the museum manager. When i got there i uncovered the scene as shown in the picture. I immediately cornered off the scene so that it was disturbed. John was just coming to as i approached. He was incredibly disorientated and agitated. His pupils in his eyes were very dilated on darted from side to side. He stumbled out of the chair. My initial thought as that he was drunk or on drugs. He gradually seemed to come around and when i began to question him he started to appear very much as if he was lying. I was very suspicious so arrested him straight away. The policeman at the scene

  12. I remember the day well. It was quite a quiet day but the day was marked in my mind by our plumbing system totally failing us. This meant that all the toilet facilities were out of action which was a nightmare for an institution like ourselves. Luckily there was one toilet working on the upper floor but this soon became over crowded and dirty. To compensate people using it, i employed a toilet lady and gentleman who had perfume and talc powder to dry peoples hands. However I had to fire the gentleman looking after the men’s toilets as when i went in at about two thirty the floor was covered with powder. He said that a flustered guard had knocked it over in a hurry when he was leaving. What annoyed me was his failure to sort it out. He had just left the stuff all over the floor!! I mean people must have got covered in it!! What was he thinking. Then of course i heard the alarms going off notifying the staff that the building had been broken into!!! I had to go and switch off the alarm system and find out what happened. Bob the Buildings manager

  13. Only toilets working Cafe where the guards had breakfast and Jim was found Gallery where painting was stolen Coffee machine

  14. I am an artist myself. I had come to the museum especially to see the painting. I booked a late lunch from work and thought i’d pop into the museum. I left work at 2:15pm and got the gallery very shortly after. I was surprised as i saw two guards looking like they were having a chat and a drink outside the gallery and not looking after the gallery at all. I went off to get a drink from the vending machine and when i came back i saw the gallery with glass all over the floor. The same guard was asleep in the chair in the corner. I remember thinking how negligent he was. Arnold the Artist

  15. Make a final decision .Did the guard John do it? List the evidence as to why you have come to that conclusion.
