  1. Pit & Fissure Sealants Dr.Rai Tariq Masood

  2. Introduction Pits and Fissures are the enamel faults;narrow shafts and cracks. Cement which is introduced into unprepared occlusal pits & fissures of caries susceptible teeth forming a protective layer against action of acid producing bacteria.

  3. Materials used as Sealants • Polyurethanes • Cyanoacrylates • Methylmethacrylate • BISGMA • Glass Ionomer

  4. Procedure of Application Surface Cleanliness of Tooth • To remove plaque and debris from pits and fissures of tooth. • It can be carried out by pumice

  5. Isolate and Dry the Tooth • Rubber dam provides the best isolation • If rubber dam application is not possible, use any means to keep the tooth away from saliva.

  6. Acid Etching • Removes organic material and debris from surface • Produce micro-pores into which monomer penetrates • 30-50% Ortho-phosphoric acid applied for 30-60 seconds.

  7. Rinse,Dry and Isolate the Tooth • Tooth should be rinsed for 30 seconds • Dry the tooth with compressed air • Tooth is dried until it has chalky white appearance. • Avoid salivary contamination

  8. Material Application • The sealant is then applied to the tooth according to manufacturer’s directions. • Material is polymerized

  9. Evaluate the Sealant and Check Occlusion • The sealant should be evaluated visually and tactically. • Take explorer and attempt to dislodge it. • If there are any deficiencies, add more material. • Check for occlusal high spots and correct them

  10. Indications • It is indicated when deep occlusal fissures are present. • Provided to patients with continuing caries risk or belonging to non-Fluoride area. • Children with mental impairment.

  11. Contra-indications • It is not indicated in patients with caries on other surface of tooth • Having large occlusal restoration already. • Shallow pits and fissures • Partially erupted tooth due to isolation problem • Uncooperative child due to isolation problem.
