  1. Welcome to Architect Insight 2009 What does Mickey Mouse have to tell us about the Cloud?

  2. Why bother with the cloud? • The opportunity from cloud computing is to: • Private cloud will be worth $20 billion dollars in 2012 • Just have access to more virtualised machines without building more datacentre space • have software services provided by someone else over the internet • shift everything we have into the cloud • give me something even more intangible than my datacentre is already, which means that the business are just going to keep reducing my budget • stop me having to spend so much money on the things that don’t matter to delivering IT (cooling, lighting, rack space) • help me avoid being caught out spending CapEx on new systems because now I can do the same with just OpEx • no longer need to do capacity planning • I can centralise everything in one place

  3. My definition • Cloud is an approach • Cloud is an evolution not a revolution • It brings together Utility computing • Software as a service • Adds Platform as a service • Realised in Software and services

  4. Why bother with the cloud? • Because the cloud is going to help us redefine how we architect our technology systems • Because the cloud is going to help us create new flexibility and agility • Because cloud computing has given us a new architectural paradigm, not just a service in the sky. • But the cloud demands a new respect, some new skills and some new discipline

  5. So what can we learn from Mickey Mouse?

  6. Why might we create more chaos? Primary Workload 2 x Web Role 3 x Worker Role Risk simulation External Service x Workload 5 Workload6 Workload 4 Workload1 Workload 2 Workload 3 Storage 5 Stores computed data

  7. Why might we create more chaos? • Ok, so we make a mess, we can always just wipe it clean and start again?

  8. The most important chaos avoiding strategy: • Map your business capabilities • Align you technology workloads to those capabilities • Adapt your service management • Now decide where you want to run those workloads..

  9. How can we create something beautiful? Manage risk Real-time Risk Engine Risk simulation Risk analysis Monitor Risk Manage credit risk Manage counterparty limits Manage P & L Manage stochastic volatility Monitor trade risk Analyse portfolio risk Stress test risk models Required technology workloads

  12. Tactics for avoiding chaos • Understand the value of the cloud to you and your business • Ruthlessly focus on the business capabilities we’re providing technology workloads for and the data you have • Understand technology capabilities and work out what shifts to the cloud • Build with scalability in mind • Pragmatic cloud governance and appropriate monitoring • There’s no substitute for trying it out to learn it • You have more choice now..

  13. Final thought • The cloud is all about to get personal… • Don’t believe me…???

  14. Final thought • The Web on mobile devices like the iPhone. Finally it's really usable on a phone. • Location aware applications and services • The Web in cars.  • Next-generation Wi-Fi digital cameras are wifi-enabled • Web picture frames such as Ceiva • The Web in restaurants and stores. • GardenGro'ssensor connects your garden to the Web • Everything becomes trackable with RFID. • Sensors are connecting to the Web and popping up everywhere. • Plastic Logic's portable plastic reading device. • The beginnings of an Internet of Things • The rise of Lifestreaming • Progress on Augmented Reality • These are just a few data points. There are many many more. The trendline is clear Nova Spivak 2009

  15. Thank you.. • Thank you for taking the time to listen to me: • Thanks to: • Dave Coplin • Darren Jefford • Ulrich Homann • Nova Spivak: • Walt Disney
