  1. Math CC 7/8 – Sept. 10 Math Notebook • Table of Content: Adding Positive/Negative Integers • HomePractice: Adding Integers WS Things Needed Today (TNT) • Math Notebook/Pencil

  2. What’s Happening? • Adding positive (+) and negative (-) numbers

  3. Knowledge Target: I can model integers addition with counters and number line (if needed) REMEMBER Subtracting zero (0) from a # DOES NOT CHANGE the number’s value. KEY = 1 = -1

  4. Addition of Integers Ex: Consider the addition 3 + 2 Let’s illustrate the addition using black dots for positive #s + = 5 3 2 We conceptually understand the gathering up of like items to find the total.

  5. Consider the addition -3 + (-2) Let’s illustrate the addition using solid red dots for negative numbers -5 -2 = + -3 Remember IF there is no sign in front of the number it is positive Also, look at the sign in front of the number

  6. Questions…Discuss with your Buddy/Truddy When adding integers, would changing the order in which you add them affect the answer? Explain.

  7. -8 + (- 4) 3. 8 + (- 4) 2. -8 + 4 4. 8 + 4 -12 4 -4 12

  8. Substitute y for +7 Rewrite the problem +7 + (-2) or 7 – 2 Solve…. 7 + (-2) = 5 Evaluate means to solve Substitutez for 2 Rewrite the problem 2 + (-4) or 2 - 4 2+ (-4) =-2

  9. -2 + -5= -7 Take Notes

  10. Let’s Practice +7 + -4 -4 + 7 Both ways says the same thing 3 +3 + -5 -5 + 3 Both ways says the same thing -2 +5 + -4 -4 + 5 Both ways says the same thing 1

  11. -6

  12. -2
