  1. Lesson 31

  2. Today’s Agenda • Check Study Guides and Foreshadowing handout • Embedded Assessment #2 • Multiple Choice Practice Questions • Test – next class! OBJECTIVE: Students will practice reading comprehension questions like the ones they will see on the exam.

  3. Embedded Assessment #2 – page 87 • Defend, refute, or qualify the following statement: America provides access to the American Dream. • Provide evidence from any of the selections from pages 55-85.

  4. The Introduction • Use the funnel format • Start with a big idea and work toward your thesis statement.

  5. Examples Being a kid is hard; don't let anyone tell you differently. If you ask 100 adults, you'll find that most of them wouldn't want to live through adolescence over again. Why not? There are too many things to worry about: friends, grades, why your P.E. teacher hates you, what to do when you grow up--the list is endless. That's why it would be doing most kids a favor to give them one less major concern in life. Because it would give them fewer worries, and because it would save their parents money, students in public school should have to wear uniforms. The life of a teenager in modern America is not always pleasant. Teenagers are faced with a variety of conflicts and problems that seem almost impossible to overcome. Most of these problems concern school, which is not surprising as teenagers spend an average of eight hours a day in school and school-related activities. One of the primary problems created by school is intense pressure for good grades

  6. Planning INTRODUCTION: Tie something interesting to the topic of the essay – America provides access to THE AMERICAN DREAM. THESIS STATEMENT: This should be a sentence or two that includes whether the American Dream is possible or not. • QUOTE FROM ONE SOURCE: • Introduce the author and title of the selection. • Set up the context by summarizing the topic of the selection. • Blend the quote into your own sentence. • Explain the quote and relate it back to the thesis statement. TRANSITION SENTENCE • QUOTE FROM A SECOND SOURCE: • Introduce the author and title of the selection. • Set up the context by summarizing the topic of the selection. • Blend the quote into your own sentence. • Explain the quote and relate it back to the thesis statement.

  7. Have your planning completed for next class!!!

  8. Multiple Choice Practice for Test • With other students in your pod, work through the multiple choice questions.

  9. The reader can infer that in his relationship with Lennie, George is • Equal • Superior • Inferior • Uncaring

  10. 2. The purpose of paragraph 2 is to provide details about • Setting • Theme • Conflict • Characters

  11. Which of these events occurs first? • Lennie and George drink from the pool. • Lennie and George get off the bus. • Lennie and George sit on Howard Street. • Lennie and George enter the clearing.

  12. 4. The main idea of paragraph 3 is that ranch workers • Waste their money rather than saving it • Have no permanent home • Work very hard for other people • Are lonely and lack goals

  13. 5. Paragraph 5 serves primarily to • Reinforce that Lennie and George are similar to all ranch workers • Hint that both Lennie and George are criminals • Contrast with earlier descriptions of ranch workers • Characterize Lennie and George as law-abiding non-drinkers

  14. The structure of the passage could best be described as moving from • A focus on Lennie’s weaknesses to a focus on George’s strengths • Idealistic dreams of the far-off future to realistic planning for the next day • Details about the past to plans for the future • Details of setting to in-depth development of characters

  15. 7. From details and dialogue in this passage, the reader realizes that Lennie is all of the following EXCEPT • Childlike • Cruel • Forgetful • Eager to please

  16. 8. Which is the best definition of the word mean in Lennie’s statement, “It’s mean here” (paragraph 3)? • Medium in size • Lacking in kindness • Common in appearance • Reluctant to accommodate

  17. 9. The author has Lennie speak with short, simple words and sentences in order to • Provide relief for the reader from the longer sentences of George • Serve as a contrast to the sentences describing the setting • Add extra emphasis to what Lennie says • Reflect the simplicity of Lennie’s mind

  18. 10. In paragraph 5, the author describes the basins as rattling in order to convey • The flimsy nature of the basins • The activity of the men washing • The importance of having basins • A hint danger from the rattlesnake sound

  19. 11. Which of the following is NOT a detail used to develop Slim’s characterization? • “a tall man” • “There was a gravity in his manner” • “Can’t hardly see nothing in here” • “his word was taken on any subject”

  21. 13. In paragraph 31 (begins “Voices were approaching”), the use of the phrase “someday” rather than “next month” serves to show • The vagueness of when the men will achieve their dream • The definite timeline established for the leaving the ranch • The certainty of the men’s dream coming true • That the men are convinced the dream will never be realized

  22. 14. Which of the following details in paragraph 1 does NOT support the inference that Crooks is different from the men in the bunkhouse? • “Crooks had his apple box over his bunk.” • “for, being alone, Crooks could leave his things about” • “he was more permanent than the other men” • “he had accumulated more possessions than he could carry on his back”

  23. 15. In paragraph 6, Crooks takes his hand out from under his shirt because he • Wants to be ready to defend himself in case Lennie attacks him • Does not want Lennie to think he is reaching for a weapon • Was preparing to undress for bed, but now must wait until Lennie leaves • Is embarrassed to be seen applying liniment to his crooked spine

  24. 16. In paragraph 19, the words “then remembered” refer to Lennie remembering that he • Should go see his puppy • Had not been invited into Crooks’sroom • Was not a skinner who had business in the barn • Was not supposed to pet the puppy

  25. 17. Given the setting of the first paragraph, the way Curley’s wife is dressed is • Appropriate • Inappropriate • Humorous • Satirical

  26. 18. From paragraph 7, the reader can infer that • Curley’s wife knows Lennie broke Curley’s hand • George is physically afraid of Curley. • Curley’s wife thinks Curley hurt his hand in a machine. • Curley is afraid that Lennie will run off with his wife.

  27. 19. Curley’s wife responds angrily in paragraph 33 (begins with “Curley’s wife said angrily”) because she • Does not like rabbits, and that is all Lennie talks about • Resents Lennie’s loyalty to George • See Lennie’s comments as proof that he is not really listening to her • Does not want to think about the dead puppy
