The Internet • Terms: • Browser - a software application that enables a user to display and interact with text, images, and other information typically located on a web page at a website on the World Wide Web or a local area network • URL - Uniform Resource Locator – address of websites (ex. http://www.google.com) • Web pages - a resource of information that is suitable for the World Wide Web and can be accessed through a web browser • Hyperlinks – a navigation element that links from one document to another • Bookmarks – pointers to URLs
History of the Internet • 1969 – Birth of the Internet with ARPANET commissioned by DoD • 1971 – email invented (23 hosts) • 1977 – international networks with more than 100 hosts • 1982 – TCP/IP is defined • 1984 – number of hosts break 1000 • 1989 – now more than 100,000 hosts • 1991 – WWW is invented by CERN • 1994 – commercialization is allowed (host break 3million) • 1997 – 19.5 million hosts • Today – approx. 200 million Internet users
