Intelligence
Intelligence?

  • Someone’s intelligence is their ability to understand and learn things.

  • Intelligence is the ability to think and understand instead of doing things by instinct or automatically.


What is thinking
What is Thinking?

  • Thinking is the activity of using your brain to consider a problem or to create an idea.

So we can define intelligence as ‘the ability to learn and understand, to solve problems and to make decisions’.


Can machines think
Can machines think?

  • The goal of AI as a science is to make machines do things that would require intelligence if done by humans


Turing test
Turing Test

  • Can machines pass a behavior test for intelligence?

  • The intelligent behavior of a computer is the ability to achieve the human-level performance in cognitive tasks.

A computer passes the test if interrogators cannot distinguish the machine from a human on the basis of the answers to their questions (The imitation game).


Typical ai problems
Typical AI Problems

  • Intelligent entities (or “agents”) need to be able to do both “mundane” and “expert” tasks:

  • Mundane tasks - consider going shopping:

    • Planning a route, and sequence of shops to visit!

    • Recognising (through vision) buses, people.

    • Navigating round obstacles on the street.

    • Communicating (through natural language), and manipulating objects for purchase.

  • Expert tasks are things like:

    • medical diagnosis.

    • equipment repair.

  • Often “mundane” tasks are the hardest.
