    2. Ephesians 5:21 21Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. • upotassw ~ hupotasso • ~ to place or arrange under • to organize things the way that they should be • a people’s position under a ruler • to place oneself under another’s authority or stewardship

    3. Ephesians 5:21 21Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. • upotassw ~ hupotasso • ~ to place or arrange under • to organize things the way that they should be • a people’s position under a ruler • to place oneself under another’s authority or stewardship The exact opposite of the world’s design for individuals. We are supposed to seek to be on top of the heap. Rome verses Christ

    4. Ephesians 5:21 21Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. • placing another above yourself • Matthew 20:25-28 • 25Jesus called them together and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. 26Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, 27and whoever wants to be first must be your slave— 28just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

    5. Ephesians 5:21 21Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. • placing another above yourself • John 13:12-17 • When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. “Do you understand what I have done for you?” he asked them. “You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am. Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. I tell you the truth, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.

    6. Ephesians 5:21 21Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. • placing another above yourself • Philippians 2:3-5 • 3Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. • Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus:

    7. Ephesians 5:21 21Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. placing another above yourself If no one is in charge, who is?

    8. Ephesians 5:21 21Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. • fobos~ phobos: fear (outward expression of rather than the inner feeling) • extreme respect derived from another’s power and/or position; the potential of the person to do good or harm. • “He isn’t safe, but he is good.”

    9. Ephesians 5:21 21Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. Don’t make this difficult . . . Romans 12:9-16

    10. Ephesians 5:21 21Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. 22Wives, to your husbands as to the Lord. 23For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. 24Now as the church submits to Christ, so also should wives to their husbands in everything. 25Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her 26to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, 27and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. 28In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29After all, no one ever hated his own body, but he feeds and cares for it, just as Christ does the church— 30for we are members of his body. 31“For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.”32This is a profound mystery—but I am talking about Christ and the church. 33However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.

    11. Ephesians 5:21 • 21Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. • 22Wives, [submit] to your husbands as to the Lord. 23For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. 24Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should [submit] to their husbands in everything. Hupotasso is repeated only once in verses 22-24. To supply extra “submit”s seems to change the nuance of the context.

    12. Ephesians 5:21 • 21Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. • 22Wives, to your husbands as to the Lord. 23For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. 24Now as the church submits to Christ, so also should wives to their husbands in everything.

    13. • Husbands, this is not addressed to you. • This is not something that you are to “enforce.” • “Enable.”

    14. • The context is that within the body of Christ, we are all to submit to each other. • (Any use of verse 22 must include the context of verse 23) • This is for wives to do in regard to their husbands, not to men in general. • There is no hierarchy of value here in the least. (Luke 2:51) • Let your husband be in charge. (Dominance is not in view)

    15. • This relationship was established in the beginning. Adam was put in charge and Eve was added as a fully qualified co-worker.

    16. Genesis 2:15-18 The LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it. And the LORD God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die.” The LORD God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.”

    17. Ephesians 5:21 • 21Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. • 22Wives, to your husbands as to the Lord. 23For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior.24Now as the church submits to Christ, so also should wives to their husbands in everything. • Christ has this position due to his identity/person, but we must also understand that he has paid the price for this • status as well. “Savior” ~ implicit responsibility. • Within this context, we should joyfully place ourselves under Christ. • This is not teaching that wives should endure abuse. Is Jesus abusive, domineering, controlling, mean . . . ?

    18. • Husbands have the responsibility for the outcome of their families/homes. They are the ones that God holds to account. • If God has placed husbands in this responsibility then their wives need to acknowledge this in their conduct toward their husbands.

    19. • Husbands, don’t make this difficult . . .

    20. Ephesians 5:21 21Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.

    21. Ephesians 5:21 • 21Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. • 25Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her • How does Jesus love us? (agape) • Is he kind? • Is he domineering? • Is he self-centered? • Does he sacrifice willingly, intentionally for us? • Does he serve us? • Does he seek our best interest over his own?

    22. Ephesians 5:21 • 21Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. • 25Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her • I am to sacrifice whatever it takes for my wife’s well being.

    23. Ephesians 5:21 21Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. 25Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her 26to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, 27and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. The depth of Christ’s love for us, his sacrifice of himself for us has graced the best, the good into us, completing us. Should not a husband’s love have a similar effect on his wife?

    24. Ephesians 5:21 21Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. 25Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her 26to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, 27and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless.28In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. Who wants to come home to a miserable wife? Far better to love joy and happiness into her!

    25. 28In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29After all, no one ever hated his own body, but he feeds and cares for it, just as Christ does the church— 30for we are members of his body Your relationship with your wife is supposed to illustrate Christ’s love for others.

    26. 28In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29After all, no one ever hated his own body, but he feeds and cares for it, just as Christ does the church— 30for we are members of his body. 31“For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh. To harm your wife is to harm yourself. To bless your wife is to bless yourself.

    28. 28In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29After all, no one ever hated his own body, but he feeds and cares for it, just as Christ does the church— 30for we are members of his body. 31“For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.”32This is a profound mystery—but I am talking about Christ and the church.33However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.

    29. It is not that you need to love yourself before you can love your wife, but that some level of self-love is a given.

    30. • h de gunhinafobhtai ton andra • fobew~ phobeo: to be put in fear • fobetai ~ phobetai: subjunctive tense

33However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, that the wife might respect her husband.

    32. Wives, don’t make this difficult . . .
