What is place value?

Place value is the value of a digit as determined by its position in a number

Example:

Place Value Chart

By looking at the place value chart, you can see that the number 4 is in the hundreds place.

Understanding a Place Value Chart

Reading and writing whole numbers can best be explained by using a place value chart.

In our number system the placement of each digit in a numeral is important. Each place has a certain value.

You read a place value chart from left to right.

What each place represents…

The value of a digit depends on its place in the numeral

In the number 3,498, the 9 is in the tens place. If we were asked how many tens are in the number 3,498, we would say 9.

For Example:

You can also think of it as…

9 Tens

=

90

In your notebook write the name of the place for each underlined digit.
• 526 6. 300
• 4,015 7. 892
• 6,203 8. 1,623
• 1, 781 9. 17
• 902 10. 346
