Parents and Siblings • Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was born on the 18th of July 1918 • His parents were Noqaphi Nosekeni, Gadla Henry Mandela • His father was chief of the Thembu tribe • His brothers and sisters were LiebyPiliso, Baliwe Mandela, NothusileBhulehluth, Mabel NotancuNtimakhwe, Mhlalwa Mandela, Constance MbekeniMandela, Nomabandla Mandela, Makhutswana Mandela and Daligqili Mandela

Life as a boy • At seven years of age, Rolihlahla Mandela became the first member of his family to attend a school, where he was given the name "Nelson", after the British admiral • Nelson’s father died when nelson was nine from lung mildew • The new chief of the Thembu tribe David Motsamayi adopted Mandela his mother was sad but happy he was going to get a proper education

  4. How he got his surname Mandela • This is the name of the clan of which Nelson Mandela is a member. A clan name is much more important than a surname as it refers to the ancestor from which a person is descended. Madiba was the name of a Thembu chief who ruled in the Transkei in the 18th century. It is considered very polite to use someone’s clan name.

  5. His career • Mandela studied first for a Bachelor of Arts at the Fort Hare University but was forced to leave before graduating. Then, later in life while in prison, Mandela studied for a Bachelor of Laws from the University of London's External Programme • In his spare time Nelson Mandela studied law so he could help black people and become a lawyer

His career 2 • After university he joined the African National Congress (ANC) • At first they protested calmly against apartheid, apartheid was where the white were allowed everything and the black were only allowed to be places the white weren’t but after a while they protested violently when they were ignored by the government • Nelson was arrested and put into prison where he was sentenced to life imprisonment on Robben Island • His prison number was 46664 • He spent 18 years on Robben Island and was transferred to PollsmoorPrison in March 1982 and was freed in 1990 and ANC (African National Congress) was unbanned • In 1994 he was elected president of South Africa and resigned for a peaceful life with his family in 1999

Life after he came out of prison • In 1993 he was given the Noble Peace Prize for his honouring work • In 1994 he was elected president of South Africa when black people were allowed to vote and replaced the old South Africa flag • In 1999 he retired as president of South Africa • He travelled to Ireland where he met with the then president at the time Mary Robinson and was given the freedom of Dublin
