  1. Hertford & Ware Deanery Mission Action Planning 2013

  2. The MAP Process Listen Celebrate Check Assess 1. Look 4. Act Prayer Action Values Vision Communicate 2. Discern 3. Plan Priorities Actions How Goals

  3. Our looking World Church • On the edge or • At the heart • Buildings an asset or • A liability • Weaknesses • Growth in faith • Growth in numbers • Strengths • Pressures • Interest • Indifference • Hostility

  4. Society Strengths • Widford - Our village is a strong community, though some key people have recently moved away. • Bayford & Brickendon - is a lively community with many activities. Both villages situated in a beautiful part of the world; Bayford has a bi-annual Gardens Open and a well supported CofE School. • Bramfield - Delightful village. Many know each other.

  5. Society Under pressure • St Andrews - Increased burden of financial stress and unemployment. • Bengeo - People live pressured and demanding lifestyles putting relationships under strain • All Saints - Highly pressurised working lives

  6. Wareside - No strong shared sense of community • Hunsdon - There is a significant changing population as people move in and out • Hertingfordbury – More commuter families resulting in less cohesive community; Concerns over Traveler plans to move into the area • Hertford Heath - Society is leaving us behind - Sunday activities, busy people without time for church. High property values means young families can't stay in the village. • Lt Berkhamsted - We have a village shop, the only one now in our five villages. Only 3 buses a day, petrol is an issue, chemist 5+ miles away. Under pressure

  7. Society Interest • Widford - Local people’s interest in the church is increasingly focussed upon its building, not its faith • Essendon - The Church and Churchyard are very much valued by the village community. • Stapleford - A friendly and supportive village generally, although many of us don't know everybody. • Bayford & Brickendon - Appreciated by the communities which they serve even if attendance does not always reflect it.

  8. Society Interest • St Andrews - Lots of exterior interest in new Wellbeing centre from NA, AA, Mind, etc. • Bengeo - Our landmark church buildings make a large contribution to local identity and pride

  9. Society Indifference • Wareside - Local people exhibit a lack of interest in getting involved in the life of the church. • Our society has moved significantly away from the Christian foundation from which it has benefited. • St Andrews - Main part of parish very different socio economic mix to church congregation. • Hertford Heath - We are well regarded in the community, but not generally thought of as relevant or effectual.

  10. Society Hostility • Hunsdon - There has been surprising hostility from some residents towards our plans to build a new centre • Stapleford - Issues of Women Bishops and Homosexuality have dominated the national press and can distract.

  11. Society Hostility • Hunsdon - There has been surprising hostility from some residents towards our plans to build a new centre • Stapleford - Issues of Women Bishops and Homosexuality have dominated the national press and can distract.

  12. Church On the edge? • Watton at Stone - At the edge - modern village grown along road / river. • Lt Berkhamsted - We need to review our service times and type. • Ponsborne - The people of Newgate Street appreciate the Church's presence although they don't attend very much, and the service congregations are very much "gathered". • Bengeo - The traditional church is hanging on the coattails of a rapidly changing society and culture

  13. Church At the heart? • Waterford - Along with village hall - only amenity left. • Bramfield - Church very much part of the village. Church people very much part of the community. • Essendon - 'Festivals' are very well supported. The Church is a visible presence in the village and in its activities. One of the cohesive forces in the community. • Ponsborne - Many parents connected with the school see Monday morning assemblies & School communion as their 'Church'.

  14. Church Buildings an asset? • Watton at Stone - Ancient, large beautiful building. • Waterford - Very beautiful building inside, esp. W Morris windows. • Bramfield - Ancient building, liked and respected by many. • Hertingfordbury - New Parish Room has opened new possibilities within community

  15. Church Or a liability? Bengeo - We cannot make further use of St Leonard's Church without toilet facilities

  16. Church Weaknesses in the congregation • St Mary's Ware - A weekly pattern of worship is largely of the older generation with young families and young people more random in attendance. • Bengeo - Very few fathers accompany young children to worship • St Andrews - Congregation not very biblically literate. Congregation tired after tireless fundraising for new hall/wellbeing centre.

  17. Church Weaknesses in the congregation • Wareside - We are a very small, predominantly elderly congregation, struggling to make ends meet. • Widford - Numbers are declining as a result of age and infirmity. Money is tight although we have reserves. • Hertford Heath - We are small, and lack key people in key areas.

  18. Church Growth in faith • Stapleford - Some members of our congregation are attending an Open Learning Course, Trinity College, Bristol, to explore their faith. • St Andrews - Prayer becoming a much more central part of our mission.

  19. Church Growth in numbers • Hertingfordbury - Steady growth in young families inspired by successful church school. Many wedding couples are choosing to continue coming to church • Hunsdon - We are growing, and our age profile is expanding. This presents new opportunities and challenges. • All Saints - Record numbers of people requested pastoral services last year, suggesting that people really know and trust us to meet their needs.

  20. Discern • Vision • Priorities • Goals

  21. Vision • Maintaining a vibrant Christian presence in every community • Developing sharing and support across parish boundaries • Identifying different issues in villages and towns

  22. Priorities • Keeping the present pattern of ministry & level of stipendiary clergy. • Parish structures remaining the same • Christchurch Ware as a resource – training, especially Local Ministry Development. • Developing Reader ministry, especially beyond their own parishes. • Rural strategy & multi-parish benefices – working across parish boundaries

  23. Goals • Maintain existing staffing & structures for five years • Two new Local Ministry Development Teams by 2018 • New Readers active throughout the deanery • New coherent strategy for rural multi-parish benefices
