  2. Excel – Formulas • Formulas are calculation expressions • Starts with a “=” • The formula expression is shown in the formula bar but the formula result is shown in worksheet • Examples CPSC 203 Tutorials by Jie Gao

  3. Excel – Functions • Functions are predefined formulas • They are organized in categories • Use the “Paste function” button or “Insert  Function” menu • Choose function • Provide arguments • Input by hand • Pick by mouse CPSC 203 Tutorials by Jie Gao

  4. Show Formulas • By default the spreadsheets only show formula results • Formula expressions can be shown in spreadsheets • Menu Tools  Options, View tab, check option Formulas • Uncheck it to return to formula result view CPSC 203 Tutorials by Jie Gao

  5. Excel – Useful Functions • Statistical • Min, Max, Average • Mathematical • Sum • Date and time • Now • More … CPSC 203 Tutorials by Jie Gao

  6. Excel – Cell References • Range • Named by the cells on upper left and lower right corners • Custom names can be provided in the name box • Relative • Absolute • Use “$” to indicate absolute references CPSC 203 Tutorials by Jie Gao

  7. Excel – Chart Wizard • “Insert Chart” button or “Insert  Chart” menu • 4 steps • Select chart type • Define source data and series • Chart options: labels, legend and axes • Create chart as: object or sheet CPSC 203 Tutorials by Jie Gao

  8. Excel – Tricks in Chart Wizard • Select source data range before starting the wizard • Specify the series names and labels by cell references • Make use of the preview CPSC 203 Tutorials by Jie Gao

  9. Excel – Modify Charts • Text elements: Use the format buttons directly • Size and position: Use handles to adjust • Other appearance: Right click and use “Format …” menu • The 4 steps of chart wizard also have corresponding menu items CPSC 203 Tutorials by Jie Gao

  11. Assignment 1 • Remember: it contains 3 parts • It is not required to fit the spreadsheets into single pages • Make sure you have your official name and tutorial section number on the pages • A cover page is not required for this assignment CPSC 203 Tutorials by Jie Gao
