Science- Course Overview • Goals: • To familiarize students with basic concepts relating to science as • identified by PA state state “Core” standards. • To improve science skills through hands-on laboratory investigations, • as well as reading/writing activities related to current science topics. • Texts/Readings: McDougall Littell Science Series, (home/in class.) • SEPUP (Science Ed. for Public Understanding Program) • Science World periodicals. • Content: • Space Science: astronomy, space exploration • Ecology: ecosystems, energy flow, classification, biomes • Life Over Time: evolution theory, fossils, etc… • Diversity of Living Things: kingdoms survey

Science- Continued • Grading: 80% Assessments 20% Other (homework, etc.) • Tests: • “OSCAR” pre and post assessments per unit. • Major tests after most chapter completion. • Quizzes: one or two per chapter • Lab Activities: usually graded as assessments • One or two small research projects, most work to be done • in class. • Midterm and Final: • Midterm at midyear, based on first two units. • Final exam at end of year; cumulative for entire year. • Both grades combined to count one-ninth of total grade • for the year. • Extra Credit: available before end of quarter, check teacher websites. • How to Help Your Child: • Check work nightly, question for understanding, ask to see test • and quizzes which have been returned. • Check teacher website nightly for Homework and upcoming • Assessments. • Check your child’s grades at least WEEKLY on the Parent Portal.

Special Education Supports and Services • A student’s IEP team consists of: Core and Unified Arts teachers, Special Education teacher, Counselor, Principal, Parents, and the student in 7th grade. • The IEP team places emphasis on the least restrictive environment for student learning through the IEP. • The IEP team ensures the scheduled services of students as indicated in their current IEP’s.

Special Education Supports and Services • The IEP team utilizes the specially designed instruction and accommodations for student’s needs in all academic settings as noted in their current IEPs. • The Supplemental Learning Support classroom strives to best implement the general education curriculum to mirror the regular education classroom. • When specially designed instruction is needed, the supplemental learning support classroom will modify the curriculum to best support the growth and mastery of concepts and skills to benefit the student.
