Telecommuting • Working at a distance from traditional company office, connected in cyberspace: • What are some advantages/disadvantages from the employee and employer perspective? • How does this alter the physical distribution of the business? • What are the risks of telecommuting? • Do you think all industries will adopt telecommuting?

Job destruction or creation? • People once feared computing technology and the internet would cause mass unemployment. • Do you consider this a valid fear? • Can you identify a time in history when a technology impacted the workplace, making it more efficient and productive? • What are some industries that were harmed? • Would it be ethical to withhold technology from a developing country because it would destroy jobs?

Overall Impressions • Robots and algorithms are getting good at jobs • Now better than humans • Should this be a concern? • If you think it is ethical for robots to take over factory jobs, do you feel the same way about white collar jobs? • What will humans do for work? • Economy productive, does not need human workers • Managing transition a challenge • Are droids taking our jobs?

  13. Yes, they are taking our jobs…but • Focusing on that fact misses the point entirely. • Now we are freed up to do other things • Reduce poverty, labor time, live more efficiently • Is it ethical to state that the jobs created are more important than the jobs that were destroyed?

  15. Monitoring is not new! • Did you think once about the fact that your employer is watching you? • Is that changed you behavior? Increased your productivity?

Is employers have the right to watch you? • Your employer can legally monitor your use of the phone, internet, e-mail or fax in the workplace if: • The monitoring relates to the business • The equipment being monitored is provided partly or wholly for work • Your employer has made all reasonable efforts to inform you that your communications will be monitored.

  21. What about employee’s privacy? • Is monitoring a violation of privacy of the employees? Why? • Is the need to run a business enough more important that privacy issues in the workplace? Why?

Rule-Utilitarianism • focused on consequences: • Adopt moral rules that when followed by everyone, lead to greatest happiness • Case: Imagine now you run a business which handling secure or confidential information with thousands clients and 30 employees. • Is monitoring a good thing? • Is the privacy or security of your clients more important than your employees? Why? • What would be your priority if you were running a business, client’s privacy? Employee’s privacy?
