Notes on the Inspector’s Final Speech • The Inspector uses a didactic tone • He feels morally responsible for ensuring the Birling’s learn from their mistakes. • His views are very much those of J.B Priestley’s. He is a liberal and a socialist, believing that we have a duty of care to others. • The purpose of this speech is to shock and instruct. • The message is as much for the audience as it is for the characters. • Through the voice of the Inspector, Priestley is able to project his views on how we should lead our lives. • He uses commands/imperatives to assert his authority. • He fixes them with an intimidating gaze. • ‘But then I don’t think you ever will.’ Almost defeatist attitude to what has happened. He hasn’t had the reaction he expected. • Constant repetition of the second person. ‘You’

  3. The Inspector’s Impact … • Table Round Robin: Look closely at Mr Birling’s words on page 57. What do you think are his main concerns following the departure of the Inspector? • In shoulder pairs, choose at least five important quotes from two of the following characters from the final section of the play: • Mr Birling (See Example) • Mrs Birling • Eric • Sheila • Gerald Croft Challenge: Refer to Priestley’s themes and social message in your analytical notes.

  4. Mr Birling – Language Focus – What are the key words? • ‘Most of this is bound to come out. There’ll be a public scandal.’ • ‘He had a bit of information, left by the girl, and made a few smart guesses – but the fact remains that if we hadn’t talked so much, he’d have had little to go on.’ • ‘By Jingo! A Fake!’ (excitedly) • ‘He had the laugh of us alright.’ • ‘The whole story’s just a lot of moonshine.’

  6. Essay Question: • Does Priestley’s portrayal encourage you to feel sympathy for Eric at any point in the play? • Remember to support your ideas with details from the play.
