  2. Review of 9th c. BC Prophets: Obadiah & Joel – the day of the Lord Oba 1:15ff For the day of the Lord is near upon all the heathen/nations; but upon mount Zion shall be deliverance, and there shall be holiness; the deliverers will ascend mount Zion to judge the mountain of Esau (Seir); and the kingdom will be the Lord’s. Joel 2: …the day of the LORD is coming; Surely it is near, A day of darkness and gloom, A day of clouds and thick darkness. Rend your heart and not your garments. "And it will come about after this that I will pour out My Spirit on all mankind; And your sons and daughters will prophesy, Your old men will dream dreams, Your young men will see visions. "And even on the male and female servants I will pour out My Spirit in those days. "And I will display wonders in the sky and on the earth, Blood, fire, and columns of smoke. "The sun will be turned into darkness, And the moon into blood, Before the great and awesome day of the LORD comes. 850 BC 800 BC

  3. Review of 9th c. BC Prophets: Obadiah & Joel Joel 2:32 …and it shall come to pass that whosoever calls upon the name of Yahweh shall be delivered; for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem there shall be those that escape… 3:1 For behold in those days and at that time, when I restore the fortunes of Judah and Jerusalem, I will gather all the nations… 3:16 the Lord is a refuge for His people and a stronghold to the sons of Israel. Then you will know that I am the Lord your God, dwelling in Zion My holy mountain. Act 3:18 -21 "But the things which God announced beforehand by the mouth of all the prophets, that His Christ should suffer, He has thus fulfilled. Repent therefore and return, that your sins may be wiped away, in order that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord; 850 BC 800 BC

  4. 9th c. Summary Obadiah: the saints (ascenders of Zion) shall judge the world (Edom) on the day of the Lord. Joel: In the days of the Spirit being poured out (“those days”) God would establish His spiritual people and dwell spiritually among them in a spiritual Zion, a spiritual ‘solemn assembly’. At the same time, He would judge the world of the ungodly, those who reject the good news, the disobedient and rebellious, and bring to desolation all who rebel against Him on that day of the Lord. 875 BC 850 840 830 800

  6. Psalms to 9th c. Prophets – Obadiah & Joel • Psalmsrevealed significant and substantial knowledge of the Messiah to come; prophet, priest, king, judge…incarnation, suffering, death, resurrection, enthronement w/ universal dominion at God’s right hand. By ~1000 BC the ‘picture’ of the kind of Messiah to come is clear! • Obadiah and Joel reveal the effects of the Messiah’s work;‘the day of the Lord’,judgment against the world, the remnant on Mt. Zion where there is escape, and the Holy Spirit poured on those who call on His name, without distinction of male, female, slave, free, Jew, Gentile…a solemn assembly of the saved. 875 850 840 830 800 790 750 740 720 Obadiah ------------------------------ Amos ------------------- Joel ------------------------ Hosea ----------

  7. 8th c. B.C. Prophets – Amos ~755 BC & Hosea ~725 • Amos – HS will reveal God’s plan to rebuild the house of David, restoring it as in days of old (one king/one kingdom), and the remnant of the world (Edom) would be part of His possession as Jew/Gentile in the days that He would pour out His Spirit. • Hosea – like Amos the HS speaks through Hosea of the restorative work of the Messiah; those who are “not My people” shall be made to be “My people” as Gentile/Jew are united in the Messiah as Yahweh plants a spiritual people on the earth through His Messiah. • Psalms reveals much about the Messiah, followed by prophets who speak of the restorative work of the Messiah…what His suffering, death, and resurrection will bring. 875 850 840 830 800 790 750 740 720 Judgment; Mt Zion; HS outpoured Restorative work uniting Jew/Gentile Obadiah ------------------------------ Amos ------------------- Joel ------------------------ Hosea ----------

  8. 8th c. B.C. Prophets – Amos ~755 BC • ~ 755 B.C. Amos is called by God from his home in Tekoa (12 mi. S. of Jerusalem) to prophesy in Bethel (12 mi. N. of Jerusalem). • Call to repentance during a time a great moral decay and spiritual repression; warning of consequences, foretelling of judgment (doom); (6:7; 7:11,17). Foretells the effectual work of the Messiah as a king. • Distinction must be made always between kingdom and race; one will be destroyed the other will not. 9:8 • Amos 9:11 "In that day I will raise up the fallen tent/tabernacle of David, And wall up its breaches; I will also raise up its ruins, And rebuild it as in the days of old;” • “In that day” is the period of the S. kingdom’s destruction and scattering; sifting the people among all the nations (v.8-9) • The ‘tent’ or ‘house’ of David was in a state of decay due to immoral kings/leadership; ~170 yrs before Babylonians remove the S. kingdom • The ‘breaches’ [begun by Rehoboam] & corrupt kings would be walled up, repaired; no more corrupt monarchy.

  9. 8th c. B.C. Prophets – Amos • Amos 9:11 "In that day I will raise up the fallen tent/tabernacle of David, And wall up its breaches; I will also raise up its ruins, And rebuild it as in the days of old;” • “as in the days of old” (II Sam 5:1-5) refers to time when David ruled over a united kingdom; people of God were one kingdom/one king. • 9:12 That they may possess the remnant of Edom And all the nations who are called by My name," Declares the LORD who does this. • the peoples/ethnos/nations who would be called by His name include the restored of the two former kingdoms AND Edom; • The people called by His name would be Jews AND Gentiles • See Acts 15:16-18 (James to the brethren about the Gentiles); at the time James spoke, no king had ruled over Israel for >600 yrs. • See Eph 2:13-15 • 9:13 – prosperity of sowing/reaping occurring simultaneously (Jn 4:36-38); the fulness of spiritual harvest is expressed in metaphorical hyperbole.

  10. 8th c. B.C. Prophets – Amos • 9:14 – this work takes place under the rule of the restored ‘house’ of David; the spiritual fulfillment is in the “remnant according to the election of grace” (Rom 11:5 [Is 11:11]). • 9:15 – the restorative work of God on behalf of His people and ‘planting’ them cannot refer to the physical land as those kingdoms were removed permanently; Ps 72 states His dominion is ‘from sea to sea…unto the ends of the earth’ and that “all nations shall serve Him” • ‘All nations’ [ethnos] is not physical land; the promise to Abraham that all nations would be blessed was a spiritual promise; not the separate land promise. • As the gospel spread and the spiritual, united ‘Israel’ [people of God] expanded and embraced all nations/peoples, the whole earth became the land of God’s people. • Amos describes/foretells the spiritual Israel of God (Gal 6:15; Phil 3:20-21) • Heb 12:22,28; Rev 14:1-5 speak of Mt. Zion the heavenly Jerusalem which is the land Yahweh planted His people upon and shall no more be plucked up (Amos 9:15)

  11. 8th c. B.C. Prophets – SUMMARY of Amos • Amos’ prophecy introduced the idea (reality) that God would restore (spiritually) the house of David, Israel, Judah, including the remnant of Edom (symbol of the world). • James (Acts 15:17) referred to this as “the residue of men” • All peoples of all nations would be gathered as one (spiritually) in a harvest and planting that occur simultaneously (evangelizing/immersing). • This spiritual prosperity would be continuous in the sense of being without season, with no regard to seasons (one season = dispensation). • These people who call upon His name, who God would call His people would be planted in a “land” from which they could not be plucked (Jn 10:27-29) • This spiritual land would be permanent in sense of belonging to God (Heb 12:22ff); in strong contrast to the land lost and devastated repeatedly before the N. and S. Kingdoms were destroyed forever.

  12. 8th c. B.C. Prophets – Hosea 750-725 BC • Hosea prophesied after Amos; uncertain as to how long afterward. • Assyrians referred to 8x in Hosea; obviously during the rise of Assyria • Like Amos (S. Kingdom), Hosea condemned sin/wickedness, emphasized the deity and sovereign rule of Yahweh, stressed the holiness of Yahweh and the certainty of divine judgment if repentance did not occur. • 1:4 – I will cause the kingdom of the house of Israel to cease; • occurred in 722 B.C. as Assyrians captured the N. Kingdom and carried the surviving remnant into Assyria as foretold (11:5) [very small remnant] • Hosea emphasized the religious apostasy of the nation (N. Kingdom) as they gave themselves wholly/entirely over to idol worship. • Hosea Ch. 4 – Ch. 14 identify the wickedness of the people at every level; social, political, religious. God rejected them as “not my people”. 750 BC 725BC

  13. 8th c. B.C. Prophets – Hosea 750-725 BC • 4:6 My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I also will reject you from being My priest. Since you have forgotten the law of your God, I also will forget your children. 14 - So the people without understanding are ruined. • Israel manifested their lack of faith in God by appealing to Assyria and Egypt for help instead of appealing to Yahweh (5:13; 7:11; 8:9;12:1); Because of this the people would “eat unclean food in Assyria” (9:3). • Hos 9:17 My God will cast them away Because they have not listened to Him; And they will be wanderers among the nations. • Throughout the prophets there is condemnation of wickedness and the call to repentance, the warning of consequences and foretelling of impending judgment against the wickedness of the nation; but in each one there is a ‘break in the clouds’ where the HS speaks of the work that God will accomplish in a brighter future (the day of the Lord). 750 BC 725BC

  14. 8th c. B.C. Prophets – Hosea 750-725 BC • Hosea is told to take a wife (prostitute); three children result: • Jezreel = to scatter/sow • Lo-ruhamah = no mercy • Lo-ammi = not my people • Through these names God reveals what He plans to do; • He would scatter the nation and plant unto Himself (1:3-5) • He would cease to show mercy to the nation (1:6) • He would reject them as His people (1:9) • The break in the clouds: (1:10) - And it will come about that, in the place Where it is said to them, "You are not My people," It will be said to them, "You are the sons of the living God." • Hos 1:11 And the sons of Judah and the sons of Israel will be gathered together 750 BC 725BC

  15. 8th c. B.C. Prophets – Hosea 750-725 BC • Hos 1:11 And the sons of Judah and the sons of Israel will be gathered together… • This is the first explicit word of the prophets that the two groups by name will be re-united. • They would appoint one leader when they submit to their king named David: • Hos 3:4 For the sons of Israel will remain for many days without king or prince, without sacrifice or sacred pillar, and without ephod or household idols. 5 Afterward the sons of Israel will return and seek the LORD their God and David their king; and they will come trembling to the LORD and to His goodness in the last days. • In that day, the relationship would change (2:23) "And I will sow her for Myself in the land. I will also have compassion on her who had not obtained compassion, And I will say to those who were not My people, 'You are My people!' And they will say, 'Thou art my God!'" 750 BC 725BC

  16. 8th c. B.C. Prophets – Hosea 750-725 BC • Paul quotes from Hosea 2:23 and 1:10in Rom 9:24-26 to prove that Jew and Gentile (not My people) would be called His new people. • Rom 9:24 even us, whom He also called, not from among Jews only, but also from among Gentiles. As He says also in Hosea, "I WILL CALL THOSE WHO WERE NOT MY PEOPLE, 'MY PEOPLE,' AND HER WHO WAS NOT BELOVED, 'BELOVED.'" "AND IT SHALL BE THAT IN THE PLACE WHERE IT WAS SAID TO THEM, 'YOU ARE NOT MY PEOPLE,' THERE THEY SHALL BE CALLED SONS OF THE LIVING GOD." And Isaiah cries out concerning Israel, "THOUGH THE NUMBER OF THE SONS OF ISRAEL BE AS THE SAND OF THE SEA, IT IS THE REMNANT THAT WILL BE SAVED; [cited from Hosea 1:10] • Peter summarizes Hosea’s two passages in I Pet 2:10: …for you once were NOT A PEOPLE, but now you are THE PEOPLE OF GOD; you had NOT RECEIVED MERCY, but now you have RECEIVED MERCY. • A better day lay ahead: 2:14-17 “a door of hope”, return of a remnant before the Messiah appears, for He must be fulfilled in the land of their fathers. 750 BC 725BC

  17. 8th c. B.C. Prophets – Hosea 750-725 BC • Hos 2:18-21 "In that day I will also make a covenant for them…and will make them lie down in safety. "And I will betroth you to Me forever; Yes, I will betroth you to Me in righteousness and in justice, In lovingkindness and in compassion,And I will betroth you to Me in faithfulness. Then you will know the LORD. "And it will come about in that day that I will respond," declares the LORD. "I will respond to the heavens, and they will respond to the earth. • Hosea is the first prophet to mention explicitly a “new covenant”, using these words. New as in “kainos”, not “neo”; a new kind/quality of covenant of a completely new kind of relationship. • Betrothal is a marriage/covenant word; a new bond and binding, to be forever (19-20); • 2:21-22 It will be Yahweh who plants a spiritual people on the earth, and “I will also have compassion on her who had not obtained compassion, And I will say to those who were not My people, 'You are My people!' And they will say, 'Thou art my God!'" 750 BC 725BC

  18. 8th c. B.C. Prophets – Hosea 750-725 BC • Hosea’s wife (Gomer) had sunk so low morally as to be of the value of a slave (below that of a harlot); her value was placed at that of a wounded, damaged slave (Ex 21:32), and Hosea purchased the prolific adulteress for the equivalent value of 30 pieces of silver [15 shekels silver, 1.5 homer of barley]. • 3:3-4 she was kept under the prophet’s care for a time of testing before being accepted in the full marriage relationship; likewise Israel would be without king and priest (worship) for many days. • Use of “the latter days” used throughout the OT almost always refers to the Messianic period; the restorative work of the Messiah is presented as more difficult and glorious than man can imagine by depicting the lowest moral depravity and rejection of a people who once knew God. • The idea of ‘David their king’ will be fully developed in Jeremiah and Ezekiel so that it is clear that the future David is the Messiah. It is then, in those days, that a new covenant will be established, a new betrothal unto God forever, and Jew/Gentile would be united under the Messiah. 750 BC 725BC
