  3. Claude Watson Arts Program • Earl Haig has 2100+ students • Earl Haig has one of the largest clubs, councils, teams, co-curricular and extra-curricular programs of any school in the country.

  4. Claude Watson Diploma • 8 MAJORS credits • 2 MAJORS credits each year in grades 9, 10, 11 & 12 • plus 3 Elective credits over 4 years • Students must take a Minor in grade 9 • Total of 11 credits for CW Diploma • Students may take Dance in Grade 9 as a Health&Phys. Ed. credit

  5. Claude Watson Diploma • The Claude Watson diploma is awarded upon completion of the OSSD requirements and is of value when applying to universities or conservatories of arts training. • 95% of our graduates go on to post-secondary education – primarily universities

  6. Credits in CW • Grade 9 students take 9 credits in Gr. 9 • Grade 10 students take 9 credits in Gr. 10 • Students take 8 credits in grade 11 • Students take 6 - 8 credits in grade 12

Grade 9 Majors • Dance, Drama, Music, Screen Arts and Visual Arts are time-tabled every day. • One academic credit is composed of all CW students every day of the week during period 3. • All other courses every other day • 1 arts elective outside of the Major in grade 9 • Lunch is 38 min. during period 3

  8. Grade 10, 11 & 12 Majors • Dance, Drama, Music, Screen Arts and Visual Arts • are timetabled every day all year • two more arts electives

Expectations : Artistic Progress • Throughout each year students must work to maintain a high standard in both the Major and elective programs. • Students must earn 2 credits in their Arts Major each year with an average of at least 80% as well as completing three requisite arts elective credits. • Students will also be required to fulfil curricular and co-curricular performance and exhibition expectations.

Expectations : Academic Success • Dual thrust program of Arts enrichment and academics • All Claude Watson students must demonstrate an acceptable level of progress in their academic and elective subjects. • A minimum of 65% in all subjects must be maintained • Students in grade 9 and 10 must carry a course load of 9 subjects each year.

  12. Expectations The Claude Watson Program fosters talent and growth not only in each student’s major discipline, but in all the creative and performing arts which form the program. Claude Watson students will be expected to attend performances, recitals and exhibitions in support of their peers so that they may experience a broad range of artistic endeavors.

  16. Theatre and Drama • Drama is traditional theatre techniques and is performance based.

Orientation - Camp Walden Grade 9 Arts Intensive and Orientation • new students come from 50 + schools • Camp Walden is an Arts Intensive, group team building and leadership camp • 3 day overnight field trip in Sept. • goal is to help ease the transition from grade 8 to grade 9 • an arts intensive program in their Major

  35. Applications • Students can apply in one arts area only. • Applications will be available online.

  36. Auditions • What area do I audition into? Choose your passion! Is this what you live for?

  37. Auditions Is this something that you want to do everyday for the next four years? Are you committed to the arts area? Can you meet the commitment of co-curricular & extra-curricular activities? Academics?

Auditions • Consists of two parts: the class and the interview • During the class students will participate in artistic activities where our Arts teachers and a guest artist will view and assess the student’s artistic potential. • As well, students meet with the same staff for a Q & A where they will: - perform a prepared piece for Dance - a given monologue for Drama - a selected piece of music for Music - a written or visual portfolio for Screen Arts - a personal portfolio for Visual Arts

  39. Dance audition preparation We recommend that the student has some previous training in ballet, modern and or jazz.

  40. Dance audition preparation We look for passion, creativity and natural talent.

  41. Drama • Students will be required to prepare a monologue.

  42. Drama • Students must also be part of a group activity and performance on the day of the audition.
