  1. Reviewing the UN Security Council Tyler Zschach Adam Bodner Anthony Frost Kyra Azzato

  2. Has the Current Model Worked? • Authorized intervention in Korean War • Mozambique • El Salvador • Iran Sanctions • Suez Crisis

  3. Security Council Failures • Iraq • Russia-Crimea Crisis • Syria • Rwanda • Bosnia • Somalia • Angola • Cold War

  4. Diagnosing the Problems • Checks and Balances • New World Powers • Failure prompts action • Timeliness • Reactivity

  5. Security Council Solution • 5 new permanent members • Retain same amount of rotating members • Requires 2 permanent members to veto • Rotating members retain their vote, but no veto power • 2 year rotations for non- members

  6. Pros of our Solution • 2 Vote Veto (Permanent Members Only) • Would combat realist approaches to governing states • More updated representation of the world • Proportional representation

  7. Cons of our Solution • Still gives disproportionate representation to world powers • May marginalize rotating members • Could lead to a more fractured, faction-based world
