Global Engineering Excellence Study The study covers the following research areas: • Competitiveness and technology • Career paths of graduates in scientific and engineering disciplines • How first-class engineering and science education is designed and implemented • The development of future trends in these fields • How a successful interchange of knowledge can be promoted between universities and companies

The Local within the Global Germany: High social status, innovation, high quality of work, but lack of mobility and flexibility China: Tremendous long-term human resource for engineering , but need for creativity and innovation United States: Technologically advanced economy, but dependent on foreign-born engineering talent, lack of interest in engineering among young students Switzerland: Long history of multicultural assimilation and international cooperation, but need for more entrepreneurship and innovation in engineering education Japan: Tendency to “workforce islands”, lack of mobility and flexibility in industry and education Brazil: Nimble at technology transfer, but insufficient social status and remuneration

Global Engineering Excellence Study Results • Global competence needs to become a key qualification for engineering graduates • Transnational mobility for engineering students, researchers, and professionals needs to become a priority • Global engineering excellence depends critically on a mutual commitment to partnerships, especially those that link engineering education to professional practice • There is an urgent need for research on engineering • in a global context Four recommendations:

  10. Recommendation 1 • Intercultural education must move beyond “add-on” programs • International research and education should merge • Research universities should exploit international potential • Greater supportive role of industry Global competence needs to become a key qualification

Recommendation 2 • Universities: • Remove barriers to studying, working, conducting research and attending meetings internationally; expand incentives • Create strong inter-institutional international partnerships • Governments • Relax restrictive visa policies and work permits • Funding agencies • Provide more support for international study, work and research programs • Industry • Support faculty and student mobility • Offer sabbaticals in industry to promote awareness of the global practice of engineering Transnational mobility for engineering students, researchers and professionals

Recommendation 3 • Industry must take the lead in developing opportunities for students to practice engineering in a global context • Universities should initiate more collaborative activities with industry • Increased cross-border collaboration among professional engineering organizations A mutual commitment to partnerships between engineering education and professional practice

Recommendation 4 • Need for theoretical basis regarding learning behaviour and models • Need to learn more on organizational processes and management methods that instil global competence in engineers • Government agencies need to create programs that support research on global engineering • Industry must play an active part in the assessment and evaluation of international skills and capabilities There is an urgent need for research on engineering in a global context

The program includes a one-week workshop at a major location of the sponsoring company. Content To prepare top engineering students to perform successfully in a global working environment.   18. Internship & GEIP-Workshop • The students will conduct their internship in the local department. • All GEIP-Interns will attend the GEIP-Workshop at the End of July 2008. The selected students will be part of an international network, where they get in contact with students from the GEE-Universities. This network will be established through a Workshop in a major location of the sponsoring company where all Global Engineering Students come together and get to know each other.During this workshop the GEIP-Students will visit plants or R&D Centers and have discussions with senior management and senior engineers as well as an intercultural workshop." The goal will be to get the experience in working on international teams on certain engineering topics, supported by the coaching from Industry professionals. • The GEIP-Workshop will be organized and paid for by the sponsoring Company.
