  2. The Start of the Space Age • "An Act to provide for research into the problems of flight within and outside the Earth's atmosphere, and for other purposes."

  3. With this simple preamble, the Congress and the President of the United States created: • National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) on October 1, 1958.

  4. So it Begins…. • The “Cold War”: • After WWII the USA and the USSR were locked in a struggle to prove which country’s ideas and ways were the best.

  5. Space Race • During this period, space exploration emerged as a major area of contest and became known as the space race.

  6. The first satellites • October 4, 1957 the Soviets launched Sputnik 1, first unmanned satellite to orbit the Earth.

Kennedy announced "I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to Earth." • A direct response to Soviet successes in space
