Preliminary Connection Analysis of ALN Project

This study presents initial findings from analyzing connections in the ALN project, with a focus on server and client modes involving a live webserver and proxy clients. The data collected, while relatively small, provides insight into connection lengths, traffic distribution, and RTTs.

  2. Setup - Server Mode Internet www.postel.org • A live webserver instrumented with Web100 • Relatively small sample; Results indicative • 21K Connections collected over few days • Ignored all connections except those to or from port 80 • Existing unmodified site being served.

  3. Most connections are short and have small MaxCwnd • Small number of connections have large Cwnds

  4. Most connections are short (mice) • Most traffic is carried by the long connections (elephants)

  5. Connections Not Too Short Or Too Long

  6. Most connections < 400 ms RTT • Grouping of RTTs about 10ms (LAN), 80ms

  7. Setup - Client Mode Internet Proxy Clients • Apache webserver configured as proxy • Instrumented with Web100 • Relatively larger sample • 150K Connections • Ignored all connections except those to or from port 80
