Colts History • 1946 – The bankrupt Miami Seahawks were purchased and relocated to Baltimore, Massachusetts • 1946 – They were renamed “Colts” as a result of a contest in Baltimore won by Charles Evans • 1951 – The franchise was dissolved by the NFL because of its bad financial condition
1953 – As a result of fulfilling a challenge of selling 15,000 season tickets in six weeks, the Colts were reestablished in the NFL • 1953 – The Dallas franchise was moved to Baltimore, keeping the blue and white Dallas colors but changing its name to the Colts • 1958 – The Colts won their first Western Division Title • 1958 – The Colts beat the New York Giants 35-27 to win the World Title
1963 – Don Shula became head coach • 1968 – The Colts lost Super Bowl III to the New York Jets • 1969 – The NFL merger placed the Baltimore Colts in the American Football Conference • 1971 – The Colts defeated the Dallas Cowboys 16-13 in Super Bowl V • 1972 – Robert Irsay acquired the Baltimore Colts • 1975 – Ted Marchibroda became head coach
1983 – In the first round of the NFL draft, the Colts selected John Elway, but subsequently traded him to Denver for offensive tackle Chris Hinton, quarterback Mark Herrmann, and Denver’s first round choice in the 1983 draft • 1984 – Robert Irsay moved the Baltimore Colts to Indianapolis • 1997 – Bill Polian was named president • 1998 – Peyton Manning was drafted • 2002 – Tony Dungy became head coach
