Caracol , Belize. Caracol means “snail” and refers to the sinuous roadway that approaches the site. It was discovered by loggers in the 1930’s. Initial work was carried out in the 1950’s by the University of Pennsylvania.

  1. Caracol, Belize

  2. Caracol means “snail” and refers to the sinuous roadway that approaches the site. • It was discovered by loggers in the 1930’s. • Initial work was carried out in the 1950’s by the University of Pennsylvania. • It has been the focus of a long-term archaeological project led by Arlen and Diane Chase since the 1980’s. • At it’s height the city had a population of 140,000 and covers 10 sq. miles.
