  3. Finding the Theme Look for motifs (repeating patterns and symbols) Any allusions in the story? The title of a story often relates to its theme

  4. Theme vs. Moral • A theme is not the same as a moral • The moral of a fable is its lesson • The Tortoise and the Hare • Moral: Slow and steady wins the race • Possible themes: • Endurance • Diligence • Tenacity

  5. What does it mean? • Identify the theme in: • “Indian Camp” • “The Masque of the Red Death” • “Young Goodman Brown” • “A Good Man is Hard to Find” • “A Rose for Emily”
