  1. LESSON PLAN LESSON NOTES:TEACHING A POEM “APRIL SHOWERS” General Aids: A class room, black board, chalk, duster, pointer etc. Specific Aids:A model showing ‘April Showers’, chart with the poem written on it. Actions and gestures of the pupil teacher will also be helpful in this process. Instructional Objectives: To develop the skill of recitation among the students. To add some new words to their active vocabulary. To help them compose simple sentences. To develop their aesthetic sense Specifications: The pupils- 1.Get familiar with the poem ‘April Showers’. 2.Grasp the theme of the poem; 3.Develop their power of imagination; 4.Appreciate the theme of the poem; 5.Enjoy the rhythm contained in the verse; 6.Memorise a few lines from the poem Introduction and Motivation: The pupil teacher asks the following general questions:- 1.Which is the fourth month of the year? 2.How many seasons are there is year? 3.Which is the best season when birds, flowers and children are happy?

Announcement of the topic: These questions will lead the teacher to announce the topic and he will say, “well, students, today I shall teach you a beautiful poem, ‘April Showers’ describing the scene on a rainy day in April.” Presentation: The pupil teacher will present the topic with the help of a model and some pictures related to the topic. Text of the poem: “April showers” The leaves are fresh after the rain; The air is cool and clear, The sun is shining warm again, The sparrows hopping in the lane are brisk and full of cheer. And that is why we dance and play, And that is why we sing, Calling out in voices gay; We will not go to school today Nor learn anything! It is a happy thing, I say, To be alive on such a day. Step1 Recitation by the teacher (pupils’ books closed): The is the first recitation of the poem by the teacher, with the student’s books closed. The pupil teacher gives an effective reading with proper stress and intonation and meaningful poem.No explanation is given here.

Step2 Recitation by the teacher(student’books open):-New the teacher shows some pictures related to the poem ,April showers’ and again recites the poem . this is the second recitation of the poem by the teacher with student’s books open. B.B.Work. ‘April showers.’ Step3 Model Association:-the teacher explains the main idea of the poem with the help of a model. The teacher says “In this poem the poet says that after rain, leaves and flowers feel fresh, the air is cool and happy on such a day .They sing, dance and play and want themselves to enjoy in this weather. Step4 Recitation by the student:- The teacher asks the students to recite the poem stanzawise. Their pronunciation will be checked and improved .Meaning of difficult words are given stanzawise. Stanza 1 The Teacher reads the first stanza of the poem and explains it. B.B. Work Word Meaning Shining Giving out light Again Once more Warm Hot Hopping jumping Lane Narrow street Brisk Swift, fast, active Pronunciation and explanation :- The pupil teacher lays stress on the Pronunciation of some difficult words, as, Shining, hopping, brisk etc. Step 5: The teacher recites the poem again the pupils are encouraged to do the silent reading of the poem to grasp the theme of the poem.

  4. Stanza 2 The teacher recites the next stanza of the poem and explains it: B.B. Work Word Meaning Voices sounds Gay joyful Alive living, full of life Pronunciation and spellings The teacher lays stress on the pronunciation of some difficult words and asks some spellings as:- Calling out, voices, anything, alive etc. Step 6:Choral recitation: First, the recitation is done in small groups. The teacher joins the students. Then after, the whole class recites the poem chorus. Step 7: Recitation will be done by the teacher so as to put the final stamp of the poem on students’ hearts and mind. Step 8: Recapitulation: In the end, the pupil teacher will ask a few questions from the students as: 1.How do the leaves look after the rain? 2.How does the weather become when the sun shines? 3.What do the children want do? 4.What do the children want to do? 5.What was the weather like on rainy day in April? Home work: The teacher tells the students to learn the poem by heart at home.
