  1. Estimation of storage capacity needed or limits. Comparison with existing storage facilities. • Lise-Lotte Spontón • TW5-TSW-001, D4 • Final meeting, TW5-TSW-001 and -002, 23-24 October 2006, UKAEA, Culham, UK

  2. Task description • Storage volume needed for Model AB • Suitable packaging • Cost (storage and recycling/reuse vs. disposal) • Centralized or distributed storages • Acceptance criteria for tritium • Cooling requirements

  3. Cost (1) Cost comparison between storage and recyling/reuse and disposal • DIFFICULT!!! • Not much data available (found) • Swedish data

  4. Cost (2) CLAB, Swedish interim storage for nuclear fuel. In operation since 1985. Planned, Swedish, deep repository for the nuclear fuel, which is now in CLAB.

  5. Cost (3) Total cost for deep repository = MSEK 14,540Total cost for CLAB, 50 years = MSEK 6,600 100 years = MSEK 9,700 Disposal is a factor 1.5 more expensive than storage (100 years), and a factor 2.2 more expensive than storage in 50 years. To the cost for storage, possible cost for recycling should be added.

  6. Cost (4) Planned, Swedish repository for long-lived LLW and ILW for core components and reactor internals. Waste will be interim stored in rock caverns and then put into this repository. Interim storage is planned in radiation shielded casks, which will be simple to handle after decay. The repository will consist of rock caverns at a depth of about 300 m. Waste package: concrete moulds, 1.2 x 1.2 x 4.8 mTotal volume: 11 500 m3 Nothing to compare with…

  7. Packages Example: Divertor front for PPCS Model B (2002) Contact dose rate limit for packages to be transported: 2 mSv/h Swedish S-Box, side 1.2 m

  8. Storage – water/air Outlet flow Inlet flow Sourcewater/air Outlet Cooling requirements at shut down (1) MELCOR model

  9. Storage – water/air Outlet flow Inlet flow Sourcewater/air Outlet Cooling requirements at shut down (2) Question: Can the materials used in Model AB (and B) be stored in water? Example on dry storage containers, steel lined concrete containers, used for CANDU fuel bundles.

  10. Left to do • Package requirements • Calculate storage volume needed for Model AB
