  5. info There are now over 100 million cats in the Western world and over 100 recognised breeds. Some pedigree breeds are natural breeds but others are the result of breeding. In the UK and USA there are more cats kept as pets than dogs and 35% of households with cats have two or more. Female cats reach sexual maturity between 6-10 months of age and male cats between 9-12 months. A cat's pregnancy lasts 62-65 days from conception to delivery and the average litter is 2-6 kittens. The average life span for an outside cat is only 3-5 years, whereas an indoor cat can live for 16 years or more. Their life expectancy has doubled over the last fifty years.
