LEARNING OUTCOMES At this end of the session for this week, students should be able to: • use effective language during one-to-one session (stage 1) • demonstrate interview mannerism • answer with confidence • use effective language during group discussion (stage 2) • discuss different views on a topic given • ask relevant questions to seek clarification • use sequence connectors • state your stand: agree, disagree, etc. • demonstrate effective turn taking during group discussion • prepare for Assessment 3 (Mock-job interview)

  3. Stage 1: One-to-one • Activity before the mid-semester break • Feedback? • Question? • Comments?

  4. Stage 2: Group discussion (examples) • You are offered a job overseas, which means a golden opportunity for you to be successful. But you have to leave your family behind. Would you accept it? Why? Why not? • You are offered a high salary but a longer working hours. Do you choose to stay at the current company or take up the offer? • The new job that awaits you requires a large amount of time to be spent on traveling but many benefits to your family for example, annual holiday trips, insurance coverage and fees paid for your children’s international school. However, it means less time with family. Would you accept the job offer? • Your parents’ dream is to see you working at multinational company but you’d prefer working for national company. How do you solve this dilemma?

  7. WHAT ARE YOU SUPPOSED TO DO?

Before the interview session • Form a group of 4 students. • Find a job advertisement suitable for fresh graduates (students must imagine that they have just graduated). • For a group that consists of students from various faculties, you may apply for (a)different positions within the same organisation; OR (b)the same position within the same organisation which accepts qualifications from different fields. • Study the company profiling, take note on important information of the company. • Prepare a resume related to the job you are applying for. Get all your certificates ready in a clear folder file.

  9. Before the interview session 6. Submit the job advertisement in a form of hardcopy on Wednesday Oct 29th, 2014 7. Upload the job advertisement and your resume in your personal wikispacesby Oct 31st, 2014.

  10. On the day of the interview • Bring a resume and relevant certificates in a clear folder. • Come 10 minutes before time. • Wear appropriate attire. • Smile as you enter the interview room. • Greet the interviewer. • Hand in your clear folder file to the interviewer one at a time before you sit.

  11. During the interview 1. Stage I • Individual one-to-one Q&A • 15 minutes (about 3-4 minutes each person) 2. Stage II • Group discussion • 10 minutes (equal number of time for participation)

During Stage I • The interviewer will ask the first question and interviewees will take turn to answer the question. • After all the interviewees answer the first question, the interviewer will ask the second question and the interviewees will respond one by one. • Repeat the same process for the third question.

  13. During Stage II • Discuss different views on a topic given. • Ask relevant questions to seek clarification • Use sequence connectors • Keep the discussion going for 10 minutes. • State your stand: agree, disagree, etc. • Stop when the interviewer asks you to stop.
