International Reading Association Goals • Professional Development • Enhance the professional development of reading educators worldwide • Organize and support IRA Councils and Affiliates as networks of reading educators • Promote a broad view of literacy • Help educators to improve the quality of literacy instruction through publications and • conferences • Prepare educators to assume different roles as reading professionals • Provide leadership in the continuously changing nature of reading in a digital age • Advocacy • Advocate for research, policy, and practices that support the best interests of all learners and • reading professionals • Foster life-long literacy habits • Promote high quality teacher and student learning to improve reading instruction • Keep policy makers informed about IRA’s positions • Develop policy and position statements • Provide members with background information and resources • Collaborate with national and international policy makers • (IRA, 2011)

International Reading Association State Association: Arkansas Reading Association www.arareading.org • Split into 28 regional councils • Hosts an annual convention – upcoming in Little Rock on November 17-18, 2011 • Online and print publications support reading education and research in Arkansas • Supports the Charlie Mae Simon and Diamond Primary Book Awards each year • Advocates in the legislature to support the IRA agenda • Membership dues are $20 ($10 for full time students) Membership (Arkansas Reading Association [ARA], n.d.)

International Reading Association • Began as two separate institutions: • International Council for the Improvement of Reading Instruction • National Association of Remedial Teachers • Merged to form the International Reading Association in 1956 • 1956 - First International Convention held in Chicago, IL with the theme “Better Readers for Our Times” • 1958 – First International Award in Reading presented in Copenhagen, Denmark • 1967 – First IRA book published: Adult-Basic Reading Instruction in the United States by David Ford and Eunice Nicholson – hundreds have been published since History (Jerrolds, 1977)

  9. International Reading Association Other Resources • IRA Radio – Airs monthly on the BAM! Radio network for educators. Each month • features an expert talking about a subject of interest to IRA members • ReadWriteThink.org – Lesson plans for all levels featuring online and interactive • tools in a searchable database • Choices Reading Lists – Book lists chosen as readers favorites, announced in April • Children’s Choices – Brief reviews of 100 titles, chosen as favorites by children • Teacher’s Choices – 30 books chosen by teachers, librarians, and reading • specialists as outstanding for curricular use • Young Adult’s Choices – 30 books selected by teenage readers as favorites (IRA, 2011)

International Society of Technology in Education The International Society of Technology in Education (ISTE) is a nonprofit professional organization with a worldwide membership of over 20,000 leaders in educational technology. It is dedicated to providing leadership and service to improve teaching and learning by advancing the effective use of technology in K-12 and teacher education.
