  1. Unit 6 Study Guide* Select Questions

  2. Number 4 To find the mode, look for which number has the most x’s. Mode = 5 To find the median, use one of the strategies taught to locate the middle number. Median = 5 2 + 3 + 20 + 30 + 24 + 21 = 100 Find the Mean first. To find the mean you need to add all the values together and then divide by the number of x’s. 100 ÷ 21 = 4.8 (Round to the tenths)

  3. Number 5Mark’s test scores in science were 85, 94, 90, 85 and 97 for the semester. What is his mean score? 85 + 94 + 90 + 85 + 97 = 451 451 ÷ 5 = 90.2

  4. Number 6Alan earned $23, $26, $25, $24, $23, $24, $6, $24, and $23 gardening. Find the median and mode of the data. Put them in order first: 6, 23, 23, 23, 24, 24, 24, 25, 26 The Median is 24. Next, identify the mode. Mode means “most.” The Mode is 23 and 24.

  5. Number 7When is it most appropriate to use the mean of a data set? When is it most appropriate to use the mode? When is it most appropriate to use the median?

  6. Number 8What type of correlation do you see between the size in carats and the price? Positive - Strong

  7. Number 9Given the following line plot: A. determine the mean and median. B. Which of these is the best measure of center? Given - Mean = 22.7 Find the Median. 22 and 23 are both left. Add the two numbers together and divide by 2. 23 + 24 = 47 47 ÷ 2 = 23.5 Part B: Since there are no outliers, the mean is the best measure.

  8. Number 10Draw a line plot using these numbers: 0, 0, 1, 1, 1, 2, 2, 2, 2, 2, 3, 3, 3, 4, 4, 5, 5, 6, 7, 7, 9 5 1 2 4 8 3 0 6 9 7

  9. Number 11Find the mean absolute deviation of the following data set: 3, 3, 4, 5, 5 Step #1 (Find the mean) 3 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 5 = 20 20 ÷ 5 = 4 Step #2 (Count the steps) 1, 1, 0, 1, 1 Step #3 (Find the mean of the steps) 1 + 1 + 0 + 1 + 1 = 4 4 ÷ 5 = 0.8

  10. Number 14Students collected canned food from 11 classrooms. Is there an outlier? If so, what is the outlier and how will it affect the mean? Yes, there is an outlier. The outlier is 28. The outlier will make the mean higher.

  11. Number 15Find the mean absolute deviation of the following data: (Hint – Find the mean first) 18 Step 3 : Find the Mean of the Steps 5 + 7 + 4 + 14 + 2 + 0 + 10 + 24 = 66 66 ÷ 8 = 8.25 Step 1 : Find the Mean Mean = 42 Step 2 : Count the steps 5, 7, 4, 14, 2, 0, 10, 24

  12. Number 17There are three sets of data: set A, set B, and set C. Students correctly calculated the Mean Absolute Deviation (MAD) for each set. The MAD for set A was 3.4. The MAD for set B was 7.5. The MAD for set C was 5.3. A. Which set of data had the most variability? B. How do you know? • Set B • The higher the number, the greater the variation.

  13. Number 18If the Average height for these mountains is 12 km, how high is the Pavonis Mons Mountain? 12 12 12 12 12 60 50 10 - 60 50
