Process towards the Strategy • Internal deliberations in the Department • Conference – • opportunity for key education and other stakeholders to have a greater understanding of range of issues and opportunities – evidence based data • Research at • National level – ESRI, Inspectorate and VFM review • International level – OECD and EU • Findings - complementing each other • Creating an Intercultural Education Strategy • Partnership/ consultation process • Evidence based research

Consultation • Key stakeholders invited to • provide written submissions by end of Oct. 2008 • Fora arranged for Nov/ Dec for key stakeholders to discuss intercultural education • 2009 - Writing up and incorporating findings of research – • need findings asap – summer 2009 • Final Strategy document – summer/ autumn 2009

International perspective • OECD • Questionnaire completed Sept. 08 • Visits in December 08 ( fact finding) and in Spring 09 (policy visit) • Country note • Provide advice and guidance – based on international best practice • raise awareness of differences & also the similarity of our challenges and opportunities • Offer independent policy recommendations

  7. EU • Ireland will provide its views on the Green Paper • Migrants here are mainly first generation • Adults are highly educated • Most are achieving well • Language needs • Need for a positive climate in schools

  8. OECD Country Note • Evidence based data being collected to inform Ireland from an international perspective about the development of the intercultural education strategy • Intercultural Education Strategy in 2009 will be launched but format, as yet, undecided
