How it began • One of the first items that successfully employed principles of rockets was the wooden bird. • In 400 B.C., Archytas amused the citizens of Tarentum by flying a pigeon made of wood • About three hundred years after the pigeon, another Greek invented a similar rocket-like device called an aeolipile

  3. Just When did it happen? • The exact time remains unclear • It may have been an accident • The Chinese wanted to create explosions during festivals. They filled bamboo tubes with a mixture and tossed them into fires. Maybe some of the tubes failed to explode and they started experimenting

  4. Who first used real rockets • The date reporting the first use of true rockets was in 1232. • During the battle of Kai-Keng • Through 13th to the 15th centuries there were reports of many rocket experiments.

  5. Uses? • Warfare • Fireworks • Transportation (thought up by Chinese)
