  6. BIKE SAFETY The number-one way to stay safe while riding a bicycle is to always wear a helmet. Head injuries cause 70 to 80 percent of the deaths from bicycle accidents.

  7. BICYCLE SAFETY Bicyclists and drivers must practice defensive driving. • defensive driving Watching out for other people on the road and anticipating unsafe acts • Do not ride at night or in bad weather.

  8. SKATES, SKATEBOARDS, AND SCOOTERS Wear protective gear, including a hard-shell helmet, wrist guards, gloves, elbow pads, and knee pads. Do not let your speed get out of control. Do not skate or ride in the parking lots, streets, and other areas with traffic Before you head downhill, practice a safe way to fall on a soft surface.

  9. PEDESTRIAN SAFETY Cross streets only at crosswalks. Don’t jaywalk. Obey all traffic signals. Wear bright clothing during the day.Wear reflective gear and carry a flashlight at night. Walk on the sidewalk if there is one. If there is no sidewalk, walk facing oncoming traffic.

  10. RECREATIONAL SAFETY Be Attentive to Weather In Electrical Storms On Hot Days On Cold Days • Try to find shelter in a building or a car. • Drink plenty of water. • Stay in the shade if possible. • Do not do any strenuous exercise. • Dress in warm layers. • Stay dry.

  11. RECREATIONAL SAFETY Use the buddy system and agree to stay with at least one other person.

  12. WATER SAFETY Learn to swim if you don’t know how. Never swim alone. Always use a life jacket when boating or waterskiing. In a strong current, swim parallel to the shore. Swim toward the shore when the current lessens. Never dive into water unless you know it is at least 9 feet deep and free of obstacles.

  14. HIKING AND CAMPING SAFETY Before you go hiking or camping, you should: • Check the weather forecast and take the necessary clothing and equipment. • Let an adult know where you will be going and when you plan to return.

  15. HIKING AND CAMPING SAFETY Wear protective clothing. Bring equipment and supplies. Follow fire safety rules. Be able to identify poisonous plants and animals. Stay with a buddy.
