Cultural snapshot • Capital: Beirut • “Paris of the Middle East” • Official language: Arabic • Culture shaped by it’s many occupations over the years: • Romans, Greeks, Persians, Turks... • Ethnic, linguistic and religious diversity • Does not cause political unrest • For most of Lebanon’s history, the communities have lived together in peace • The Druse • A branch of Islam

Music- Instruments • Oud • Pear shaped instrument similar to a lute • Tabla • Drums played with many different hand positions • The heel of the hand can be pressed into and slid along the head to bend the tone • Black spot made of paste and alters the overtones of the sound • Blocks are placed in the ropes at the side to alter the tuning • Mizmar • Double reed wind instrument instrument

Cultural Snapshot • The majority of people that emigrate from Lebanon go to Brazil! • Largest country in South America • Culture is mainly derived from Portuguese • Was a colony of Portugal until about 1810 • Also African influences • Multi-ethnic society • Full of color and life • Carnaval • Festival held 46 days after Easter • Country stops completely for about a week to participate in festivities • A Fairwell to bad things
