Survey • Do you think there is a problem with the way the youth of America speaks? Majority said: Yes -Honestly, yes. Texting, IM, and Email are great but youth is taking the slang they use for those medias and using them in everyday life. -Yes, the way they speak comes across disrespectful and rude. • Do you think journalists are undereducated? Majority said: No -50/50 -No, they just need to be educated in the areas that they are reporting in.
Do you think there is a proper way to speak? Majority said: Yes -I would like not to be bias but I do find myself thinking one way is better than another. -Yes and no. Some people speak different than others and they might think their way is proper, not yours. • Do you think movies influence our speech? Majority said: Yes -Yes, once Paris Hilton said, “That’s hot,” and it caught on. People try to imitate their role models. -Yes, people will follow trends set by “cool” actors and actresses -No, movies have the same speech we use in our own lives.
Do you think language change is good? Majority said: No - Not really. It reflects poorly on us as a country with all of our slang. Our youth is our future and everything they do or will do represents the US. -No, I don’t want to learn another language. • Do you think media invents slang terms? Majority said: Yes -I think they do come up with slang terms or sayings that will catch peoples attention or hope it will catch on. -Yes, people catch on to terms they hear from the media. -No people invent them, not the media.
Linguistic Criminals • In the past parents, teachers, and the press have all been blamed for corrupting English • Currently, it’s the media, tv, movies, radio, newspapers and magazines are at fault • Journalists have been accused of making mistakes in grammar, pronunciations and vocab usage
