  2. Exercise 1 BEFORE YOU WATCH Are you a practical person? Are you a mechanical person? Are you good at home improvement tasks? Did you ever build, repair, paint or weld something that you are proud of? Can you imagine working in a factory or an industrial workshop? What are the pros and cons of such jobs compared to office jobs? Which would you prefer? Why? Can you name 10 different tools you need in a workshop? A garden? A household? Can you identify some of the parts of a car that might be fabricated by a manufacturing company for use in the car? Did you ever see a place where tools or parts for machines were fabricated? Are you interested in learning about such processes and contemporary technology used in them? Why or why not? Explain.

WHILE YOU WATCH Exercise 2 Are these statements TRUE or FALSE? • KM Trading is able to cut thinner sheets of stainless steel than of common steel. • 40-45% of their products is made for the automotive industry. • Shotblasting is used in order to minimize the amount of paint needed. • One of their customers is an aircraft producer. • When your factory looks clean and tidy, you stand better chances of finding a business partner. • The Lotus company approached KM Trading with a business proposal. • The KM Trading representatives have never visited Denmark.

  6. Exercise 5 ROLE PLAY – PAIR WORK 1. Find a partner. Imagine you are the owner of this company. You are talking to the CEO of a large automobile company in Germany (e.g. BMW) trying to persuade them to cooperate with using your products in their cars. How would you persuade them to do business with you? What arguments would you raise? What questions would the CEO probably ask? What conditions would you insist on? Present your skits to the others. • DISCUSS: Would you prefer to be the boss of this company or the automobile company owner? Explain. How does your position in the company influence how you negotiate? Discuss how your perceived position of power and the other person’s perception of power may create different kinds of results: i.e. conflict, misunderstanding, or motivation in this situation.

Exercise 5 REFLECT • When you are negotiating a contract with someone in the business world, what kinds of cultural understanding and communication skills do you need to be aware of? • How would you adapt your communication style to that of another culture? What information would you need to be aware of? Where would you find it? • How do you learn how to be culturally sensitive? What kinds of resources and practical experiences do you need to assist you? • What are some of the consequences in the business world of not being culturally aware and culturally sensitive? Explain. • FOLLOW-UP: What is the meaning of ‘intercultural communication competence’ (ICC)? How much ICC do you have?
